Old Audio Clips (from Spring, 2000)

The RealAudio versions download much faster (about 1/4 the time) and sound almost as good as the mp3 versions.

Malaika, mp3, studio version(``Angel,'' by Fadhili Williams and Daudi Kabaka, Kenya, ~1962, in Swahili). Our arrangement uses the original tempo but has a ska beat. (3.4 minutes). Malaika in RealAudio

Masvingo Netara, mp3, studio version (``The Tar Road,'' Robson Banda and New Black Eagles; Zimbabwe, early '90s, in Shona) (5 minutes).

Masvingo Netara, mp3, live version. (5 min). The recording is poor, but the crowd (IU's African Student Association) was dancing in circles and clearly having a good time. Masvingo Netara, Live in RA

Querida Angola, mp3, studio version (``Beloved Angola,'' Valdemar Bastos in Portuguese) (5 min). Querida Angola in RA

Belle Amie, mp3, live (``Pretty Friend,'' Kanda BongoMan, Congo mid-90s, Lingala/French) (8 min). With a very lively (and largely African) crowd, but soon they start to groove. Belle Amie in RA

Audio Clips from Early Live Shows (fall, 1999)

These short clips were recorded live at several performances - so the quality is fairly poor. Most are one minute long and can be played either in MP3 or in RealAudio (28.8kb). For Samba de Orfeu and the bottom four, the MP3 was recorded before a dancing crowd, unlike the concert-style (and shorter) RealAudio recording.

Samba de Orfeu (Brazil) MP3, 2min RA, 1min
Ye Kermo Sew (Ethiopia) MP3 RA
Toa Ne Pe (Ghana) MP3 RA
Querida Angola (Angola) MP3 RA
Chozi Lanitoka (Tanzania) MP3 RA
Rivers of Babylon (Jamaica) MP3 RA
