Graduate Admission Overview and Process

In a typical academic year the IU Computer Science Department receives a few hundred applications for graduate admission, and fields at least an equal number of inquiries. The most effective way for us to evaluate your application and respond quickly is if you use the online application mechanisms listed below, and pay attention to the deadlines. The process is not completely mechanistic and we do value any information that can help determine if a match exists between your goals and the Department's. The online application is the best way to initiate that process.

Preparing and applying for admissions is a five stage process:

  1. Read the information pages about computer science admissions. Although those pages are informal advice, they tell you what we look for in your application materials. The information is extensive but for the most part is valid for any university you are applying to - so may be useful to you even outside of Indiana University.
  2. Check the deadlines for the current year.
  3. Fill out the application forms, preferably the on-line versions. Note there is a university one, and a second one specific to the CS department.
  4. Make sure your materials are sent to the correct address.
  5. See the timetable for when you might expect to hear a decision.
