• When should I arrive?
  • International Students:
    International Services requires International Students to attend their orientation sessions the week before CS orientation. Please see the International Student Orientation page for schedule and details. Attending this enables completing the required international student sessions before the start of computer science orientation, as well as providing essential information on visa requirements, required English exams, etc.
  • Domestic Students:
    Computer Science Orientation starts the morning of Friday, 22 August, 2008.
  All new students are REQUIRED to attend departmental check-in, held 9:30-11:00am on August 22 to sign AI contracts, etc.
• When should I take the Ph.D. Qualifying Exams?
  • New Ph.D. candidates: Newly entering Ph.D. candidates (who have never been enrolled in the CS graduate program) are very strongly advised to prepare for and take the "free" entry tries at the Ph.D. Qualifying Exams given 26-27 August 2008.
  • Continuing Ph.D. candidates: Continuing candidates who have been enrolled for at least one year, or who have changed from the M.Sc. to Ph.D. degree objective, must take those exams not yet completed (both exams) unless prior written permission to postpone has been obtained; an automatic failure for one of the two possible tries will be counted for any exam not taken at this time.
  Please be sure to register for the exam as soon as possible, using the on-line form at the quals implementation page (that page also includes sample exams and a FAQ). New students will need to wait to sign up until they've received their computer accounts.
• When must I start duties as an AI?
  
  • All new and returning AIs are REQUIRED to attend the general AI teaching staff meeting, Wednesday 27 August, 2008. You must obtain your AI assignments from Prof. Van Gucht and contact the course instructors no later than Wednesday 27 August, 2008. This is extremely important, because many of you will need time to prepare for your teaching assignments.
  • New students with AIships are REQUIRED to take B599. Students taking B599 are REQUIRED to attend the first B599 session and two teaching workshops during orientation week, as indicated on the schedule. Students involved in A110 are also REQUIRED to attend both the A110 orientation and the A110 scheduling meeting.

• All international students must take the English Proficiency Exam, unless they have received sufficiently high TOEFL scores to be exempted from this exam; please check your status with Sherry Kay. Computer Science students taking the proficiency exam should do so during the week of August 18th, to avoid conflicts with CS orientation events. Be sure to sign up as soon as possible to guarantee your slot and have your results in time for the TEPAIC exam (next entry). Regardless of exemption from the proficiency exam, all international AIs must take the TEPAIC exam.
• International students with teaching appointments must either be exempted or pass the English Proficiency Exam and then get a memo from the Graduate Administrator, Sherry Kay, to take the AI English Exam (TEPAIC) on Monday, August 25 and Tuesday, August 26. Interviews are in slots from 2:00pm to 7:00pm in Memorial Hall. You must sign up for a specific slot in advance. The TEPAIC is REQUIRED for new international students with associate instructor appointments. A description of the TEPAIC is available on-line. Registration for the exam is in the two-week period preceding the exam between Monday, August 11 and Friday, August 22, 2008 with Karla Reynolds in the Department of Second Language Studies, Memorial Hall 315. Students with a borderline fail on the oral portion may sign up with Karla Reynolds to take the Appeal Exam on Wednesday, August 27 and Thursday August 28. International students cannot be employed as Associate Instructors unless they pass this examination.

• Get Email account. Your welcome letter contained information on how to set up your IU account before arrival (please be sure to e-mail the graduate administrator, Sherry Kay, to let her know your username!). After arrival, use your IU account to create CS department accounts, as described in the CSG FAQ pages on accounts and account creation.
• Register -- New student registration is Thursday 28 August. It can be done on line (see below).
• Get Student ID Card   After Registering -- then, and only then, can you get your student ID card from Campus Card Services. Campus Card Services has two locations, Eigenmann Hall (look in the IU-Bloomington campus map), and in the upstairs of the bookstore in the Indiana Memorial Union.
• Get Lindley Hall access -- after you get your ID card, bring it to the receptionist in Lindley Hall 215 to get authorized for building access
• Official announcements regarding all graduate student affairs, including financial support, AI requirements, qualifying exams, etc. will be posted to the Computer Science Department Grad Student Announcements web board. Read the web board regularly, as it is the only official place for announcements. (Note that the web board requires logging in with your IU account.) If you forget how to locate this, the URL is available by following the links "Contacts" "Internal" from the CS home page, to the listing for "Web Boards". An RSS feed is available.

Orientation Events Schedule

Departmental orientation activities will be in Lindley Hall. The locations of buildings for university-wide activities can be found using the on-line IU-Bloomington campus map.
