BACHELOR of ARTS DEGREE in COMPUTER SCIENCE

Spring 2005

These requirements are derived from the 2004/06 COAS Bulletin and Supplement, but are presented in a different format to aid understanding. Although every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, the official source of information regarding College of Arts and Sciences degree requirements is the College of Arts and Sciences web page.

PART I: ARTS AND SCIENCES REQUIREMENTS

Twelve courses, one of which must be a COAS TOPICS course (E103, E104, or E105), or any Freshman Seminar course

* The 4 Natural and Mathematical Science courses can be met with CS major courses.

It is possible to fulfill multiple requirements with one course. (ie., one course may fulfill an Arts & Humanities, a Culture Studies, and the Intensive Writing requirement.)

122 total credit hours (NOTE: No more than 42 credit hours of Computer Science may be counted in this 122 credit hours minimum)

36 hours at the 300-level or above

Cumulative GPA at least 2.0. GPA at least 2.0 in Computer Science courses. No grade below C- may be used to fulfill major or minor requirements.

One foundations course and one mathematical science course, or two mathematical science courses out of Mathematics M212, M213, M301, M303, M311, M312, M343, M348, M365, M371, M391, M405, or M409, or Philosophy P251 or P350. Mathematics courses cross listed with CS and taken to satisfy a CS requirement are excluded.

C. ADVANCED COURSES

HONORS PROGRAM FOR THE BACHELOR OF ARTS DEGREE (BAH)

Official admission to the program is concurrent with admission to the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) and subject to COAS requirements.

General Requirements:

Same Arts and Sciences and Computer Science Major Area Requirements as for the BA.

Major Area Additional Requirements:

GPA of at least 3.3 in Computer Science courses. Cumulative GPA of at least 3.3.

Students must satisfy the requirements for the BA in Computer Science and the following additional requirements:

1. Computer science courses must include at least 11 credit hours of honors courses (H courses or Y499).

2. Advanced computer science courses must include at least one of the following: (a) Y499, leading to an honors thesis; (b) a "programming-in-the-large" (P) course; or (c) a graduate-level CS course (500+ level).

Advanced Courses

Most of the department's courses at the 400 level and above are classified into four areas:

1. Foundations (middle digit 0 or 1)
2. Programming languages (middle digit 2)
3. Systems (middle digit 3 or 4)
4. Applications (middle digit 5, 6, 7, or 8)
