BACHELOR of SCIENCE DEGREE in COMPUTER SCIENCE Fall 2006 These requirements are derived from the 2006-07 School of Informatics Bulletin, but presented in a different format to aid understanding. Although every effort has been made to ensure accuracy, the official source of information regarding the School of Informatics degree requirements is the School of Informatics web page. PART I: GENERAL EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS ____ English Composition ____ Intensive Writing ____ Topics distribution course (E103, E104, or E105) ____ , ____ , ____ Arts & Humanities (2 or 3 courses) * ____ , ____ , ____ Social & Historical Studies (2 or 3 courses) * * A total of 5 Arts and Humanities/Social & Historical Studies courses, 2 + 3 or 3 + 2. E103 and E104 fulfill either an Arts & Humanities or a Social & Historical Studies distribution requirement, respectively. Natural Sciences: A total of 12 credits to be chosen from Astronomy, Biology, Chemistry, Geology, Physics, or COGS-Q270 ____ , ____ , _ _ _ International Dimension
122 total credit hours 30 credit hours minimum at the 300 level or higher GPA at least 2.0 in Computer Science courses, and at least 2.0 cumulative GPA. No grade below C- may be used to fulfill major or minor requirements. PART II: COMPUTER SCIENCE MAJOR AREA REQUIREMENTS
A. CORE COURSES ____ C211 Introduction to Computer Science ____ C212 Introduction to Software Systems ____ C241 Elements of Discrete Structures ____ C335 Computer Structures ____ C343 Data Structures ____ C311 Programming Languages B. MATHEMATICS REQUIREMENTS ____ , ____ , ____ Math M211 (or equivalent proficiency), and two courses out of Mathematics M212, M213, M301, M303, M311, M312, M343, M348, X384, M365, M371, M391, M405, M409, or Philosophy P251, P350, or P352. Mathematics courses cross listed with CS and taken to satisfy a CS requirement are excluded. C. ADVANCED COURSES ____ , ____ , ____ , ____ , ____ , ____ , ____ Seven Computer Science courses to include the following: a. A foundations course and the remaining six courses from two of the three areas other than foundations, and b. Two "programming in the large" (P) courses. Advanced CoursesMost of the department's courses at the 400 level and above are classified into four areas:
1. Foundations (middle digit 0 or 1) __________________________________________________________ HONORS PROGRAM FOR THE BACHELOR OF SCIENCE DEGREE (BSH) Official admission to the program is concurrent with admission to the College of Arts and Sciences (COAS) and subject to COAS requirements. General Requirements: Same Arts and Sciences and Computer Science Major Area Requirements as for the BS. Major Area Additional Requirements: GPA of at least 3.3 in Computer Science courses. Cumulative GPA of at least 3.3. Students must satisfy the requirements for the BS in Computer Science and the following additional requirements: 1. Computer science courses must include at least 11 credit hours of honors courses (H courses or Y499). 2. One additional advanced computer science course. Questions?
