Q: How do burn DVDs?

There is a DVD burner in LH428 attached to the PC named blindcat that can be used by CS faculty, staff, and students.

Backup your CS unix home diretory to DVD

  1. Insert a blank DVD+R disc into the bottom DVD drive.
  2. Start the "Burn CDs & DVDs" (Roxio Creator Plus) application from the desktop and click on the "Data" button and then select "Data Disc".
  3. Go to Tools->Options... and make two changes:

    • Under "Write-Once DVD Compatibility" select "I only need to use discs for one recording" to ensure the greatest possible compatibility with other DVD drives. You can select multisession recording if you want but that that increases the possibility of other DVD drives being unable to read the disc.
    • Check the box to "Verify data written to disc after burning".

  4. Select the proper target drive (using the pulldown near the bottom of the window) which should be D: for the bottom DVD drive.
  5. Open your unix home directory. You can do this using either SSH or SMB access per the PC File Access FAQ
  6. Select all of the files and directories in your home directory by selecting "Select All" from the Edit menu and drag the files into the DVD burner window.
  7. Once you have added all the files, click on the red circle at the bottom right of the DVD Builder screen to burn the files to CD or DVD.

Create an audio DVD or CD:

  1. Click on the DVD Builder icon on your desktop.

  4. Once you have added all the files, click on the red circle at the bottom right of the DVD Builder screen to burn the files to CD or DVD.

Create a movie DVD from a camcorder:

  1. Connect the camcorder audio and video cables to the purple audio and video connector on Blindcat.
  2. Start DVD Builder.
  3. On the toolbar, click on Import, Video Capture.
  4. Click on Advanced Settings on the bottom left of the DVD Builder screen and select your audio and video sources. To change video format settings, including frame rate, compression and output size, click on Advanced Settings, and Format.
  5. Begin playback on your camcorder.
  6. At the end of the video playback, click on Stop Capture at the bottom left of the DVD Builder screen.
  7. To edit clips, delete content, etc., click on Edit in the toolbar.
