CSG FAQ

Q: How do I get my notebook computer hooked up to the network in Lindley Hall?

There are two different networks that you can connect to with your notebook computer or other mobile device.

  • IU Secure Wireless Network - The campus-wide IU Secure wireless network also covers Lindley Hall. This network is available to anyone with valid IU accounts.

  • CS Wired Network - This network utilizes the CS Lindley Hall wiring plant (Category 5 twisted pair wiring) to provide 10/100/1000Mbps ethernet connections in various locations within Lindley Hall. This network is available to CS faculty, staff, and students who have physical access to a network jack.

Please note that a valid IU Network ID is required to access all of these networks. If you do not have an IU Network ID and need network access within Lindley Hall, please use the CSG Help Desk to contact the systems staff to find out the available options.

Please see the details that follow for each network in order to get connected.

IU Secure Wireless Network

The IU Secure access points in Lindley Hall are part of the campus wireless network so you will have to follow the UITS instructions for connecting to the IU Secure network.

CS Wired Network

If you want to use the a wired network connection, you must do the following:

  1. Get Access To a Network Port -

You must first have access to an available network port. Please DO NOT disconnect any workstation and try to use the network wire assigned to that computer. It is possible the computer is being used remotely and unplugging the wire will make the computer unavailable. Furthermore, in many portions of the building unplugging computers will set off security alarms so PLEASE do not unplug any existing network wires. In order to get access to a network jack, please contact the CSG staff. We will provide wired network ports in offices in Lindley Hall for faculty, staff, and graduate students of the department. There are also network drops available in the Burrow Annex (LH016), LH035 (in the space between the linux machines on the table on the right as you enter the room), and the Grad Lab (LH125, on the center table behind the Suns). For access in other areas, we recommend using the wireless network.

  2. Register Your Hardware Address -

In order to use the wired network, you must first register the Hardware (or MAC) Address of the device you are using. To do this, just go to the Hardware Address Registration Page. Note that you will have to have a valid IU Network ID in order to access this registration page.

When registering, you will have to have the Hardware/MAC Address of your device. Please see the IU KB Page for information on how to get this address.

You will also have to enter a short description of the device you are connecting to the network. Something like "Windows XP Laptop" or "Apple iBook" would be sufficient.

After you register your device, you should be able to access the network within 5 minutes.

  3. Configure Your Device -

When using a CS wired network port, you must use the Dynamic Host Control Protocol (DHCP) to set the network parameters for your computer. By using DHCP, you will be dynamically assigned an IP address instead of being assigned a fixed IP address. It is likely that DHCP will be used by default, so there may be no additional configuration necessary. If you need to modify your configuration, you will need to go into the TCP/IP setup and, for Windows, select "Obtain an IP address automatically" under "IP Address". Also make sure that the "Use DHCP for WINS Resolution" box is checked under "WINS Configuration". You can get your IP address, DNS servers, default gateway, WINS servers, and DNS domain via DHCP.

Please use the CSG Help Desk to get assistance if you have any trouble getting connected.
