CSG FAQ

Q: How do I print to a CS printer from my OS X Mac?

Notice: The following instructions are only for printing to Computer Science Department printers in Lindley Hall. For printing to university public access printers (including those in the basement of Lindley Hall), please read the IU Knowledge Base article, "Using a wireless connection at IUB or IUPUI, how do I print to an STC or RTC printer?".

There are two separate networks available in Lindley Hall to Computer Science faulty, students, and staff. There are the CS wired and the UITS supported IU Secure wireless networks. You can print to the CS printers from any of these networks but there are two ways to print depending on which network (or networks) you are using. The print mechanisms are:

  1. LPD Printing - LPD printing is more straight-forward to set up but only works if you are using the CS Department wired network. If you are using the IU Secure wireless network or trying to print from outside of Lindley Hall you will not be able to use LPD printing.

  2. Samba/SMB Printing - You can use the SMB protocol to print from anywhere. The configuration is slightly more complicated but using SMB gives you the ability to print from any of the available networks. If you are using the IU Secure wireless network then you will have to use SMB printing.

The details of setting up both LPD and SMB printing are explained below.

Samba/SMB Printing

If you are using the IU Secure wireless network and you have not alredy done so, you will first need to configure your wireless computer to use the IU Secure wireless network. Please read the IU Knowledge Base article, "What is IU Secure?" for instructions. Once that is accomplished, follow these instructions:
  • Open a web browser, and enter this address in the URL address line:
  • This is a direct interface the the Common UNIX Printing System (CUPS) that is used by OS X to provide printer service. This interface allows you to configure and control printers you have access to.
  • Once you are at the Home page of the CUPS system. click the 'Add Printer' button.
  • In the Name box, enter the printer name, such as 'ps6'. You might consider adding something that will help you know that this is a samba printer, such as 'ps6(samba)', if you have the same printer configured for a wired connection via LPD printing.
  • In the Description box, just a brief description is all that's necessary, and can just be the printers' name. Click 'Continue'.
  • In Device, click the drop-down menu button, and select, 'Windows Printer via SAMBA'. Click 'Continue'.
  • In Device URI, enter: smb://username:password@samba2.cs.indiana.edu/printername. You will need to replace the username and password with the values from the Samba Printer Account Page. Replace printername with the name of the CS printer (such as ps6). Click 'Continue'.
  • In Make/Manufacture, you select the brand of printer you are configuring. In most cases in CS, this will be an HP printer. To find the make and model of all CS printers, see the printers section of the hardware database. After selecting the printer make, click 'Continue'.
  • On the Model/Driver page, select the driver for the printer you are configuring. You'll most likely need to scroll down to find it. After selecting the correct driver, click 'Add Printer'.
  • On the Set Printer Options page, you can configure various options such as Duplex Unit installed (by default, Not Installed is chosen), and you can set the printer to print Duplex by default. After making desired option changes, click 'Set Printer Options'. You are now ready to test printing.
  • Open a document, and select 'Print'. In the Printer Dialog box, select the newly configured samba printer, and click the 'Print' button.
  • You may have a box open up asking for your username and password. These are the username and password you entered from the Samba Printer Account Page. Enter them, and click "O.K". If you chose to save this username and password in Keychain, you will never need to enter them again when you print via samba printing.

LPD Printing

Once you have registered the MAC address of your computer and configured your system for access to the CS Wired network, add departmental printers simply by using the Print & Fax utility in System Preferences:
  • Open /Applications/Utilities/System Preferences, and click on the Print & Fax utility icon. Click the '+' under the Printers window on the left side of the box.
  • In the new box that opens, click on the IP icon. For Protocol:, select Line Printer Daemon - LPD.
  • For address, you enter the hostname of the server providing printer services for the printer of choice. To find out the host supporting the printer, see the printers section of the hardware database. Click on the desired printer and look in the Comments section for the name of the server for the printer. In most cases, the host server will be lpspool.cs.indiana.edu
  • For Queue:, enter the name of the printer, such as, ps6.
  • For Name:, enter the name of the printer, (ps6). If this line has been filled in with the hostname of the server, you should still change it to the printer name.
  • Location, is the room location of the printer, such as LH330 for ps6.
  • For Print Using:, click on the drop down menu button, and chose "Select a driver to use...". You can quickly find the driver you need by entering it's model number in the blank space. For example to find the HP8150 driver, enter '8150'. You will get a list of drivers available for this printer model. Chose the appropriate one, and click 'Add'
  • For installable Options, you can click Duplex Unit if the printer supports duplex printing. Click Continue, and the printer is added, and ready for printing.
Notice: You can use a web browser as outlined above in the Samba/SMB Printing section, to access and more finely configure any printers you have added.
