CSG FAQ

Q: How do I print transparencies?

First, it is very important that you understand that there are two different varieties of transparency media available in the department. Using the wrong type of transparencies in the HP laser printers will damage the printer, so please be careful. NEVER use the Arkwright transparencies that you would use in the copier in the HP laser printers because they will melt and damage the printer.

There are two different ways you can print transparencies, depending on your particular needs and preferences:

  • Black and White Transparencies - If you do not need color transparencies, it is much cheaper to first print them out on plain paper and then copy them onto the Arkwright (copier) transparencies using the copy machine in LH210. These Arkwright transparencies are available in the main office (LH215) for $0.10/sheet.

  • Printing Color Transparencies - The HP Color Laserjet printers in LH301 (ps3), LH428 (ps1), and LH215 (ps16) can print directly onto the HP transparencies (NOT Arkwright) as follows:

    1. Get the HP transparencies. These are available in the main office, LH215, for $0.50/sheet. Be sure to only use the HP transparencies and not the Arkwright transparencies that you would use in the copier.

    2. If you are printing from a Sun or Linux machine, print your job to one of the HP Color Laser printers (ps1, ps3, or ps16) and append transparency to the name of the printer. For example, if you had your slides in a file called slides.ps, you could print them using something like:

      lpr -Pps3transparency slides.ps

If you are printing from a Windows machine, you should use the printer properties menu to select Transparency media (Type) and select the option to print from the Manual Feed Tray (Source).

    3. When your print job reaches the printer, the printer will take itself off-line and the LCD panel will ask that the manual tray (tray 1) be loaded. Just load the transparencies into the manual feed which is located on the right side of the printer and you access it by opening the door that has the "1" printed on it. Just slide the transparencies in until they stop (they will push a little black switch up to tell the printer that media is loaded in the tray). Once they are' loaded, the printer should automatically start printing.

    4. When you are done, remove any remaining transparencies and shut the manual feed door.
