  • Pull down the projection screen and hook the handle on the screw in the edge of the whiteboard.
  • Turn the projector on by pressing the POWER button on the projector remote.
  • Verify that the display is from the PC. You should see the normal Windows login screen. If you do not, check that the KVM switch in the podium (on the left side) is in the Windows position.
At this point, you should be ready to login. You will need an account in order to login. If you need an account, please use the normal question/problem reporting mechanisms to request one.

Using the Linux Machine

To use the Linux workstation, perform the following steps:

  • Pull out the keyboard tray and press a key or move the mouse to deactivate the screen saver.
  • Pull down the projection screen and hook the handle on the screw in the edge of the whiteboard.
  • Turn the projector on by pressing the POWER button on the projector remote.
  • Verify that the display is from the Linux machine. You should see the normal Linux graphical login screen. If you do not, check that the KVM in the podium is in the Linux position.
At this point, you should be ready to login. You will need a CS sharkestra account in order to login. If you need an account, please use the normal question/problem reporting mechanisms to request one.

Please logout and power off the projector (hit the POWER button on the projector remote twice) when you are done.

Using the VCR

To use the VCR, perform the following steps:

  • Pull down the projection screen and hook the handle on the screw in the edge of the whiteboard.
  • Turn the projector on by pressing the POWER button on the projector remote.
  • Using the MODE button on the projector remote, select the Video 1 input source.

Please logout and power off the projector (hit the POWER button on the projector remote twice) when you are done. If you have used the VCR remote, please place it back on top of the VCR.

Using the Two Wireless Mice

The PC and Linux systems share two wireless mice. The primary mouse is sitting on the mouse pad on the top of the podium. This mouse will only work within a very short range. There is a second wireless mouse in the podium (next to the switch boxes) that should work from anywhere in the room.

The primary mouse acts like any normal wired mouse. The only thing unusual about it is the placement of the mouse buttons. The buttons are assigned as follows:

  • Left - The left button on the top of the mouse.
  • Middle - The small button on the left side of the mouse.
  • Right - The right button on the top of the mouse.
The long-range wireless mouse (located inside the podium) must first be turned on using the power switch on the bottom of the mouse. The buttons are assigned as follows:
  • Left - The largest button on the right.
  • Middle - The small button on the left.
  • Right - The middle button.
Please be sure to power off the long-range mouse and return it to the podium when you are finished with it. Also note that both mice are active simultaneously so you can easily move back and forth between them.

Connecting a Notebook Computer

To connect your notebook computer to the projection system, use the video cable that should either be on the podium or in the cable tray next to the podium. There are also audio and network cables you can use, if needed. After connecting the video cable, you will need to select the Computer 2 input source using the MODE button on the projector remote.

In most cases, use of the normal IU Wireless network is recommended. To connect your notebook computer to the wired network instead, connect the twisted pair patch cable to the ethernet port on your notebook. Your laptop should be configured to use DHCP, which is supported on the network in LH115. Your computer must be registered with the CS server, which can be done via the on-line registration page.

If your notebook does not support DHCP and you need to set a static IP address, please use the following:

  • Hostname - lh115.cs.indiana.edu
  • IP Address - 129.79.245.128
  • Default Gateway - 129.79.247.254
  • Subnet Mask - 255.255.252.0
You should find the network cable attached to the video cable.

Please power off the projector (hit the POWER button on the projector remote twice) when you are done.

Notes on Using the Projector

The projector focus should normally not require adjustment. If it is out of focus, you can adjust it by pressing the FOCUS button on the projector remote and then using the volume control buttons to adjust it.

The bulb used in this projector is very expensive and there are a few things you can do to help extend it's life. First, the projector should stay on for at least 5 minutes after it is powered on. It is hard on the bulb to be powered off without being given the chance to reach operating temperature.

Second, you should avoid powering it on and off frequently. You should leave the projector powered on for the entire presentation and, if needed, use some other mechanism to blank the screen during the presentation. You can use the MODE button on the projector remote to select a video source that has no input.
