Setting Up to Map to Your Burrow Account

For C335, all of the file data that you generate will be stored on your burrow account. There is a tool called Samba running on the burrow machine "paca" (also running on "moose" and "whale") that allows a MS Windows machine to manipulate file information in a UNIX file system. When you attempt to map your burrow home directory (\\paca\your_user_name) from the lab machines,  Samba uses the IUB-NT domain as the primary means of authenticating your request to access this resource. If the IUB-NT domain authentication fails,  Samba uses a local password file.

It has been found that there are reliability issues with Samba when using the IUB-NT domain for authentication. In about 1 out every 10 attempts to map a drive,  Samba will erroneously report that the username or password is invalid.  Once Samba fails in this way, further attempts to map a drive from this machine will fail for approximately 5 minutes.  Using the local Samba password file for authentication appears to eliminate this issue.

A utility has been created that will allow you to add yourself to the local Samba password file for the Samba process running on "paca". The following is a list of steps to go through to run this utility from the machines in the lab.

1.) Connect to paca.cs.indiana.edu using SSH.
2.) Once you have established a session on paca, type "makesmbpasswd". You will be prompted to input a password.  Once this command has completed, your username and password have been added to the smbpasswd file.  When mapping a drive to your burrow home directory, use this password.

Note:  To change your smb password after you have run makesmbpasswd, use the command "smbpasswd" .  You will be prompted through the password change process.
