October 1998 System Update Information

  • Please welcome the newest member of the CSG Staff. Bryce Himebaugh is now the Computer Engineering Specialist and his office is LH430B. Stop by and welcome Bryce to the department!
  • We now have a new color printer. Ps3 is now a Xerox C55MP Color Laser printer and is located in LH301. The old Deskjet has been setup as ps4 in LH215 for use by the administrative staff.
  • In light of some recent attempted security attacks on our systems, we are making some changes to try and harden our systems against such attacks. Some of these changes mean that services you may have used in the past are no longer available. For example, we are no longer allowing finger connections from non IU computers. We are also looking at the possibility of doing some filtering at the router. If you notice that some network service is no longer available, please let us know so we can see if we can make it available again.

New Projects and Updates

  • Networking - The complete rewiring of Lindley Hall is about 75% completed. The basement, 1st, 3rd, and 4th floors are completely done and all machine on these floors with the exception of a few machines in LH330 are now using the new ethernet switches and ATM backbone connections. This project should be completed by December 1998.
  • Wireless Network - Lindley Hall is now completely covered by a wireless network. If you have a notebook computer and you want to get "connected" to this network, please let us know.
  • Window NT Terminal Server - The new NT Terminal Server hardware is up and running Citrix MetaFrame and is undergoing testing by CSG staff. With this server, you will have access to a whole suite of Windows applications from your Unix or Mac workstation. This server will be available to all CS faculty, staff, and graduate students.
  • Remote Access - We have new hardware to replace the CS netblazer that supports ISDN and V.90. We plan to make the transition from the netblazer to the new Ascend hardware over the next couple months. Note that the CS dialup services are for CS faculty and staff only.
  • Hi-Resolution Projector - We have ordered a new 1024x768 portable LCD projector that can be used with any Sun, SGI, or PC in the building for presentations. This should be available by the end of November.
