2001-2002 Winter Break System Updates

There have been a variety of system upgrades and changes performed during the end of the Fall 2001 semester and the semester break. The highlights of these changes are outlined below:
  • Networking - The CS Department network connection to the university backbone was upgraded from 100Mbps Fast Ethernet to 1000Mbps Gigabit Ethernet and additional Gigabit Ethernet server ports were added to the router.

  • Printer Changes - The color printer in LH301, ps3, has been upgraded to an HP 8550DN Color Laserjet printer. The old Xerox printer that was ps3 has been resurrected as pstransparency in LH301 and is to be used exclusively for printing transparencies. There is also an HP 8550MFP Color Laserjet printer in LH215 named ps16 that has a copier attachment so it can do color printing and color copies. Please do not attempt to print transparencies on the new ps3, ps16, or any other HP printer since the transparencies you get in LH215 for use in the Xerox printers will melt in the HP printers and damage them.

  • Disk Quota Increases - The disk quotas for students on the central sharkestra and burrow clusters have been increased by about 70%. You can run the 'quota -v' command on any of the CS Suns to view your current disk quota.

  • Linux Server Updates - The central linux server has been upgraded and two dual processor Linux machines, hagar and helga, are available for general remote cycle serving. These machines are in the sharkestra account domain so anyone with a whale/sharkestra account can use them.

  • New Web Services - We have added support for some frequently requested services to the department web server. These include a web-based message board, a web form-to-email gateway, and a clock and counter package.

  • Windows Terminal Server - The new Windows 2000/Citrix-based terminal server is in full production and provides access to a variety of popular Windows applications from virtually any desktop computer. This is the replacement for the old ntterm which died during the Fall semester. To get started with this new system, please see the Terminal Server Page for instructions.

  • Machine Room - We had a major reorganization of the CS Machine Room (LH 416) with the addition of 5 new computer racks and an almost complete re-wiring of the room. While most of this is transparant to the average user, these changes are making space available for new equipment and making things significantly easier to maintain.

  • Network Traffic Filtering - We have implemented more aggressive traffic filtering at our router in an attempt to better secure the department network. These filtering rules block access to a variety of services that are intended for local use only and we have worked to avoid blocking traffic to needed services.

  • DCE/DFS - The DCE/DFS client software has been installed on select CS machines in order to make access to the IU CFS and MDSS/HPSS filesystem easier. Please see the FAQ entry on this topic for all the details.

  • Star Office - The Beta version of Star Office 6.0 is now available on the Suns. Please see the software database entry for more information or just give it a shot by running soffice60. The default installed version is still version 5.2.

  • Netscape - The default version of Netscape on the Suns has been upgraded to version 4.79. The version of Netscape 6 installed on the Suns has also been upgraded to version 6.1 and is available by running netscape6.

  • Opera - The Opera web browswer has been installed on the Suns. See the software database entry for more details.

  • Python - The default version of python has been upgraded to version 2.2 on the Suns. The previous 1.5.2 version is still available by running python1.5.2.

  • Forte for Java - The Sun Forte for Java programming development environment has been upgraded to version 3.0 on the Suns. See the software database entry for more details.
