Summer 2003 System Updates
There have been a variety of system upgrades and changes to the
CS computing environment performed during the Summer break of 2003.
The highlights of these upgrades are outlined below:
- Account Information Page - The web-based account information page
has been expanded and improved to give even more useful information
about your CS accounts.
Please see the
Account Information FAQ Page for more information.
- Sun Server Upgrades - A number of the departmental
Sun Servers were upgraded to new Sun Fire 280Rs, including whale (the
sharkestra server), moose (the faculty/staff server), school (the sharkestra
compute server), and rainier (the extreme server). These are dual
processor systems with 8GB (moose and school) or 2GB (whale and rainier)
of main memory. The old school (a 4 processor Sun E450 with 4GB of memory)
replaced burrowww, giving that server double the processors and memory.
- Linux Server Upgrades - A new dual-processor 3.06GHz Intel Xeon system running
Linux was added for general purpose computing needs. This system is named
hagar and is available
to anyone with with a sharkestra account. The Linux server running the Virus/Spam email scanner
was also upgraded to a dual-processor 2.8GHz Dell 2650.
- Linux Cluster - An 8-node Linux cluster and Storage Area Network (SAN) were purchased
with NSF grant funds. See the
system notice for more details.
- Programming Tools Installed - The
suite of C, C++, and Java programming tools from Parasoft Corporation
are now available on the CS Sun and Linux systems. The
Omnicore CodeGuide Java Integrated Development Environment (IDE) is also
available on the CS Sun, Linux, and Mac OS X systems. These are highly sophisticated
programming tools and environments and you are encouraged to take advantage of
them. The Omnicore tool is made available through a site license purchased by
the CS Department and the Parasoft tools through an IU-wide site license.
- LH115 Upgrades - The PCs in the LH115 classroom have all
been upgraded to new Dell Optiplex GX 260s and are running in a multi-boot
configuration of Windows, Linux, and DOS. The projector was also replaced
with a new higher-resolution Hitachi CP-SX5600W LCD projector.
- Course Schedules - The web-based database of
CS Course Schedules has been
rewritten and improved
to include a
search feature. This allows you to search on the Course,
Location, and Instructor fields for a given semester. This
provides an easy way, for example, to generate a listing of the courses
you are teaching which you could link to from
your web homepage.
- New Laptop Interfaces - There are now wired network
drops available in the Burrow (LH004), the Grad Lab (LH125), and
LH035. See the
Wired Network portion of the FAQ for more information. The
wireless network is also still available just about anywhere in
Lindley Hall.
- Security Changes affecting DHCP, ftp, POP, and IMAP -
A number of system changes were motivated by the need to enhance
system security. Included in this were the
elimination of ftp and non-SSL POP and IMAP email connections
and the requirement that
laptop computers be registered.
- Migration to OpenSSH - All department unix systems
migrated from the commercial SSH from ssh.com to OpenSSH.
Please see the
OpenSSH System Notice Page
for information about this change.
- PC Server Upgrades - The PC servers for the administative staff and
class support were upgraded to new Dell 2650s.
- Software Upgrades - There have been numerous upgrades to the
software offerings. These include
Chez Scheme 6.9b, the
Scheme Widget Library version 0.9x,
Dr. Java,
and
Prosper (a LaTeX-based
presentation package),
just to name a few.
You are encouraged to check out the
Software Database
for additional listings.
