Server Downtime and Upgrades -- August 14th, 2008, 7:00-10:00am
A series of system downtimes will occur from 7:00am through 10:00am on Thursday,
August 14th, 2008. The following systems, and the associated services, will
be down during this time:
- MOOSE - The faculty and staff login server moose will be down. The
following services hosted on moose will also be unavailable:
- All interactive logins to moose via ssh
- Printing to the administrative printers (ps8, psugrad, psletter)
- The oracle database and associated applications, most
notably the graduate student database
- WWW - The web server www.cs.indiana.edu (aka. grouchy) will be down.
The following services hosted on the web server will also be unavailable:
- All web services on www.cs.indiana.edu
- Filesystem access via /l/www
- NFS2 - The file server nfs2 (aka. toad and samba2) will be down.
The following services hosted on nfs2 will be unavailable:
- Access to a variety of software packages accessible via /l
- All research partitions under /l/research
- Samba services using samba2.cs.indiana.edu
- MAIL - The mail server, mail.cs.indiana.edu, will be down for
approximately 5 minutes during this downtime window to upgrade
the spam/virus scanning software.
The following services related to email will be unavailable
during this time:
- All IMAP and POP email access via mail.cs.indiana.edu
- Outgoing SMTP access via mail.cs.indiana.edu and smtp.s.indiana.edu
- Web email access via webmail.cs.indiana.edu
- NTADMIN - The Windows file server bl-csci-ntadmin
will be down for approximately 5 minutes during this downtime window
The following services hosted on ntadmin will also be unavailable:
- Access to faculty and staff files hosted on the Windows server
- Access to drive letters F: and I: on the administrative
staff systems
This will result in a couple user-visible changes to the CS computing
environment:
- Moose OS Change - Moose is being upgraded from a Sun Solaris
system to a Dell server running Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
The new system has much faster processors and more memory.
Users of moose who have solaris-specific paths and configurations
may encounter problems. It is also possible that software that
was being used under Solaris will no longer be available on
the new system. Please
let us know
of any problems that result and we will help you work through them.
- Increased Storage Capacity - The storage space available in
/scratch and /nobackup will increase significantly. The /scratch
partition will increase from around 30Gb to almost 2TB and retention
times will be increased from the current 1 week expiry. The /nobackup
partition will increase from 400GB to almost 10TB and user quotas
on this partition will increase.
Please
let us know
if you have any questions about this downtime.
