July 2006 - Migration to RHEL
The CS department is moving from Gentoo Linux to Red Hat Enterprise
Linux (RHEL) as the primary Linux platform in the department. While the
Gentoo Linux deployment has been generally well received we have run into
some support issues (involving 3rd party software, system stability, and
patch installation) that have lead us to move to RHEL.
This migration will take several months to complete but a majority of
systems should be converted during the months of July and August.
We fully expect
user issues to arise as a result of this conversion so
please report problems you encounter. In particular, if you are
unable to login on the console after the upgrade this is probably
due to incompatibilites in the various "dot" files/directories
between the different versions of Gnome or KDE. If you encounter
this problem, you can just login remotely (via ssh) or via a failsafe
session on the console and run resetgui. This script
will remove various configuration files related to Gnome, KDE, and X
Windows. It will display the list of things it will remove and wait
for confirmation before proceeding so check the list carefully. After
you run this you will have to re-configure your GUI environment.
