IU Computer Science Department Alumni Computing Services Policy
The IU Computer Science Department
provides various computing services to the alumni of the department. These
services include the following:
Alumni Accounts
Indiana University policy prohibits us from offering computing accounts
to all CS alumni. However, we can offer accounts on the CS systems
in limited circumstances as outlined in the Indiana University policy on
Sponsored Computing Accounts For IU Affiliates. If you continue to
collaborate with a member of the CS faculty after graduation you might be
eligible for a CS affiliate account. In this case, you must get the
sponsorship of the faculty member per the
CS Department Affiliate Account Policy.
If you do not have a faculty sponsor but believe you are doing work
directly related to the mission of Indiana University and the Computer
Science Department, you may request account sponsorship by
sending email to the
Alumni Relations Director.
IU Alumni Association IU Connect Service
The
IU Alumni Association offers a set of email and other services
through
IU Connect
and you can
forward your indiana.edu email to
this address if you create the alumni email and set up the forwarding
before graduation.
CS Department Email Forwarding Service
If you graduated with a degree in Computer Science, we offer two
email services:
- Email Forwarding - We can set up forwarding of your old @cs
email address to any external email account.
- Sender Notification - We can set things up so that anyone
sending email to your old @cs email address will get a
notice indicating that the message could not be delivered
and informing them of your new email address. In this
case the email will NOT be delivered to you but
anyone sending you email will be informed of your new
address.
To request either of these services, please send
an email to
alumni@cs that includes your IU/CS username, your new email address,
and whether you want email forwarding or sender notification.
Please note that this only applies to your CS email, not email
sent to username@indiana.edu.
Web Forwarding
If you graduated with a degree in Computer Science, then it is possible
to have your CS homepage forwarded to an external web address.
There are two options:
- Homepage Forwarding - We can set up forwarding of your homepage so that
requests to:
http://www.cs.indiana.edu/~username
are forwarded to some other URL you provide. With this option, any request
of the form:
http://www.cs.indiana.edu/~username/something
will result in a "Page not found" response.
- Web Redirection - We can set up web page redirection so that requests of the
form:
http://www.cs.indiana.edu/~username/something
are redirected to:
URL/something
where you supply URL. This option is useful if you have URLs
relative to your homepage that you still want to work and the new
site hosting your web pages has the same directory and file structure. Note
that your ~username homepage url is just redirected to URL
as the special case where something is empty.
To request this service, please send
an email to
alumni@cs that includes your IU/CS username, your new URL,
and whether you want homepage forwarding or web redirection.
File Recovery
We do full backups of all departmental file servers and
we keep these backup tapes forever (or until the backup media becomes unreadable or otherwise obsolete). If you have had an account on any of the CS systems
and would like to have files recovered, please let us know by using any one the
of the standard problem reporting mechanisms. Please
include the name of the file or directory you need along with your best estimate
of when and where the file existed on our system.
eCampus Recuiter
The eCampus
Recruiter service is available to all alumni of the CS department. This
service provides access to job listings, resume posting, and more through
the School of Informatics. If you are new to the system, you just need
to create an account and you will have full access to the system.
These services are provided as a courtesy to our alumni at no cost. If you
wish to show your appreciation and provide financial support, you are always
welcome to make a contribution to the Friends of Computer Science. Note that
contributions may be eligible for up to a $100 tax credit on your Indiana income tax
(see form CC-40, $200 for married filing jointly) plus whatever benefit you get
on IRS Schedule A. You may also be working for an employer that has a program
to match your contibutions. For more information about making donations to
Friends of Computer Science, please contact
alumni.
