Computer Science Computing Lab Usage Guidelines
Please follow these guidelines when using the machines in the
computing labs maintained by the Computer Science Department.
These machines are for use only by Computer Science students, staff,
and faculty, sponsored guests, and non-CSCI
students that have been given accounts for a class or research projects.
All problems you have with these machines should be reported to the CSCI
Computer Systems Group using the
CSG Help Desk
(https://www.cs.indiana.edu/cgi-bin/csg/wreq/req).
In the event of an off-hours emergency, please call the CSG pager at 334-6364.
For more information about the computing facilities provided by the
Computer Science Department, please see the
Computer Systems Group Homepage
(http://www.cs.indiana.edu/Facilities/).
- Please do not reboot or power-cycle any UNIX machine. If you
are having trouble with a machine, please
report it.
- Please do not lock the machine display, or leave the machine
unattended, for more than 15 minutes. If you are going to
be away from the machine for more than 15 minutes, please
logout.
- No food or drinks are allowed in the computing labs. This includes
the Burrow (LH004), the Graduate Student Lab (LH125), all teaching
labs (LH008, LH035, LH115), and all consulting/grading labs (LH016, LH112,
LH201I).
- Please help keep the computing labs clean by throwing away your trash,
picking up your printouts, etc.
- Some labs and offices have cable trays that go around the room. These
trays are exclusively for wires run by the systems staff. You should
not place anything (trash, books, toys, etc) in any of these cable
trays.
- Some of the labs have electronic security cables running to each
machine.
Unplugging, bending, breaking, or pulling on this
cable will set off the silent alarm so please be careful.
- Please don't steal our mouse pads. Pretty please!
- If the printer is out of paper, you can get more from room
LH210. It is the responsibility of the lab users to keep the
printer stocked with paper.
- If your print job is not printing, please cancel it from the queue.
You can use the lpq command to see what jobs you have in the queue
and lprm to remove jobs from the queue.
- Please do not attempt to adjust the temperature in the computing labs.
If the temperature needs to be adjusted, please
report it.
- Please limit talking and audio output so as not to disturb
other people trying to work in the lab. Please use headphones
if you wish to listen to music or other audio output.
