Ideas for Funding

General tips

  • At least take a class with a professor and do well (e.g. grade of at least an A) before talking with them about funding.
  • Be open minded to doing a Y790 with the professor (e.g. work for free) for at least one semester so you can see if you would be helpful in their research area.
  • Be imaginative - there are faculty members in other departments who are also looking for people with computing skills.

Internal Fellowships

Beenish Chaudry as an internal Computer Science fellowship.

More information about internal CS fellowships can be found: here.

Research Assistantships

Nithya Vijayakumar works for a faculty member in the Computer Science department.

Check out this to see what other professors may have funding. Typically you have to take a class the teach (and do really well - get at least an A) and do a Y790 with a professor before asking them for funding. You may also want to meet with professors who are not on this list and offer your services (for free) to help with research (reading, coding, etc.) and writing of a funding grant.

Assistant Instructorships

Amanda Stephano teaches three labs a week and assists with assignment creation and grading.

Please contact departments for procedure to apply for AI positions early.

Research Assistantships in Other Departments

Tei Laine contacted a professor in an other department whose research related to her interests. Her Professor was involved in several projects that could use grad students in programming and doing experiments etc. She picked the one that sounded most fascinating to me, and that could potentially lead to a dissertation project. She started in the project first for fun and some credit hours in Y790. Eventually the project participants (PI for instance) were quite happy about what she was doing and offered her funding. They have continued to offer this far.

Theresa Cullen reminds everyone that faculty members in the School of Education always need people with computing skills (e.g. programming) to design new learning environments.

In addition, Informatics, SLIS, HYPER are just a few more schools where computing students have been employed.

External Fellowships

Katie Siek has an external fellowship from National Physical Science Consortium.

Information about more external fellowships can be found here.

External Teaching

Tammy Toscos teaches introductory programming courses at IPFW.

Another possibility for funding is to teach at a local 2-year, technical, or four year college to get funding money (but beware - teaching too many credit hours can affect your academic progress).

Other funding suggestions from Faculty Members

Dr. Beth Plale is a faculty advisor of WIC is and is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Computer Science.

The ideal funding is in your area of interest because then you do work that is related to your concentration, and develop a relationship with a faculty member who's name is known in that concentration (whom you will then use for a letter of recommendation assuming your work is good.) Stepping one level out, the next most ideal situation is funding in your department or school, because again, your letter of recommendation will come from the same place as your degree. Stepping out one level more are the opportunities outside your department or school. In all, getting hired requires your doing your homework on what a faculty member does and how you could contribute, and actively pursuing leads.
