How to design a poster

A lot of graduate students in their 2nd year of graduate school or more have created a poster, so feel free to email them or ask questions.

The students in Informatics' HCI/d program make beautiful posters. Here are some examples: Tiffanie Shakespeare's.

Here are some of my posters (I put too much text on my papers). I have posted smaller versions of my posters on my website. All of my large poster powerpoint files are available here .

Bottom line: Make sure your font is large enough so people can see it from 3-4' away. Make sure you are consistent with punctuation, terminology, etc.

How to make a poster

I make my posters on powerpoint. I create one huge slide - Create a new powerpoint presentation and set the Page Setup dialog to have a page size of 34"x48" (or whatever the poster size should be).

I think a lot of the Informatics students make their posters in Photoshop

Bottom line: Use what you know (or can learn quickly).

How to print a poster

The easiest place to print a poster is at the IU Information Commons in the main library. It is only $10 (billed to bursar) for 3'x10' of glossy or non-gloss color printed poster.

Tips

  • Especially for CS students: If you cannot print on regular IU printers in non-Computer Science labs (yes, you need a separate IU printing account), apply for a print account as soon as possible here: https://itaccounts.iu.edu/ You need a regular IU printing account so you can print a poster
  • Ask the people at the help desk for help when printing your poster (they can help ensure your poster is printing on plotter size paper instead of 8.5"x11")
  • Be assertive - if your poster is not printing correctly, ask the person at the help desk to refund your money to your bursar account and print it again (ask for help this time)
