Just Be Presenters

Acacia   Acacia is a senior at Indiana University double majoring in Computer Science and East Asian Languages with a focus on Japanese. She has been around and interested in computers all her life. She has also been an undergraduate assistant instructor in CS and is a member of WiC. She has lived in Germany for one year and has been an exchange student in Japan for six months. Outside interests include reading, ballroom dance, anything related to Japanese culture, and visiting strange roadside attractions.

Adity Adity is a 4th-year PhD student in Computer Science. Before she came to IU, she completed her Bachelor of Arts in Computer Science and Mathematics at Mount Holyoke College, an all women liberal arts school, in Massachusetts. Her hometown is Dhaka, Bangladesh. her interest in computers began when I was in 7th grade, the first time she had her own computer. Her research interests include human computer interaction, userend security, information visualization and using technology to improve our daily life. Currently she is involved in developing a cell phone program that motivates teenage girls to exercise. She is also working on a project in which they are investigating how to enable common users to manage their own devices securely. Besides computer science, she enjoys arts and crafts, painting and drawing, cinema, music, video editing and photography.

Craig Shue Craig is a 4th-year Computer Science PhD student and an associate instructor at Indiana University. Before coming to IU, he attended Ohio University which was about 60 miles from his hometown of Circleville, Ohio. He became interested in computers in elementary school, which is when he first encountered them. His research interests include networking, security and distributed systems. His latest research focuses on preventing the forgery of IP addresses, limiting the ability of criminals to hide their identities on the Internet. In his spare time, Craig enjoys reading and running.

Jacob Ratkiewicz Jacob is a 5th-year PhD student in Computer Science. He grew up in South Bend, IN, where he discovered computer programming at around 4th grade on an old Apple computer purchased from a thrift store. Currently he works with Professor Filippo Menczer on issues related to information retrieval in structured and unstructured text and the Internet. He is also interested in exploring the topology of the Web, computer security and privacy (especially phishing), and is currently collaborating with Markus Jakobsson and Fil Menczer to write a book on click-fraud. Jacob is currently a consultant to a large financial institution and to RavenWhite, Inc. In his free time, he enjoys weightlifting, running, and travel.

Larisse D. Voufo Larisse is a 3rd year PhD Student at Indiana University. Before coming to Indiana, she received her Bachelor of Science in Computer Science at Binghamton University. She spent a year working on matrix computations with Dr. David S. Wise, the focus of the research being on improving algorithms' locality, using block recursive algorithms involving Morton ordering and Ahnentafel indexing. Currently, she is focusing her areas of interest, which mainly include Algorithms and Programming Languages. Larisse is expecting to graduate in May 2010.

Samantha Foley Sam is a 3rd-year PhD student in Computer Science. She came to Indiana University (IU) from SUNY Fredonia, which is near her hometown, Buffalo, NY. She is an associate instructor and member of the Women in Computing group at IU. Sam jumped at the first opportunity to take a programming class in high school where she found she had a passion for problem solving. Her interests include music, movies, tai chi, dancing, playing outside, laughing, yoga, reading, and hanging out with her friends and family.

Tara Bazler Tara is the manager of the User Experience group at Indiana University and has a Master's degree in Human Computer Interaction from the School of Informatics at IU. One of her main goals at work is to provide users with better information systems by promoting development processes that include user-centered design, usability evaluations, and research. She became interested in computers after taking a programming course during her sophomore year in college. Tara is on the worship team and is an adult leader for the youth group at her church. She enjoys music, horseback riding, and long walks - especially in the snow!

Tina Hoffa Tina is a sophomore in the Hutton Honors College at Indiana University. She studies computer science and works as a peer tutor for students who are taking the introductory course. She has been curious about how computers work since she first heard the alien sounds of a dial-up internet connection when she was five or six years old, but her real interest grew when she realized that computing was something she could actually do. She has always loved math, so her mother suggested taking a computer course when she was looking for a new major after spending her freshman year pursuing jazz studies on the trumpet. She tried out computer science and loved it. She is currently working at an internship at IU as a research assistant for the LEAD project. She also enjoys playing sports, dancing, biking, kickboxing, painting, having fondue and salsa parties for Colts games, and she is a member of Alpha Gamma Delta sorority.

Sarah Reeder is an informatics major. She likes computers because they are fun because they help solve problems. She says 'I like helping people solve problems with comptuers.'

Sara Nickel is an undergraduate at IU. She is currently undecided for a major and is new to computer science. Here interest in computing comes from a desire to do graphics work.

Adam Hinz is a computer science undergraduate. He says "There are times when I don't like computers, but that's one of the reasons I'm in CS to make computing easier."

Hyewon Kim

Jereme Magsaysay is a majoring in geography. He works with computers because they make the complicated math involved in geographic studies easier and he likes video games. He became interested when he got his first gaming system, but now wants to own his own business working with Geographic Information Systems (GIS).

Valkyrie Savage is studying computer science. She says, "I started playing computer games with my grandpa and my dad when I was about 2. I've been hooked on them since. Plus, I think it's fascinating how much we all rely on computers, and how many people know so little about them." She is unsure of how to impact the world, but is sure that understanding computers will help her in whatever field she ends up in.

Peyma Hosseinzadeh studies in the Informatics and German departments. She loves video games and took an Informatics course that got her interested in how they worked. She hops to work in Europe (perhaps returning to Germany, where she spent several years) helping companies solve their problems. Understanding computers and their application is a part of those plans.

Melanie Dybvig is a double major in Mathematics and Computer Science. She has been working with computers as long as she can remember, and has always been curious about how they worked. Her dad is a Computer Scientist and has always been willing to share his work with her. She hopes to attend graduate school and eventually secure a research position at a university.

Shelly Hunert is a Computer Information Systems (from the business school) and Computer Science major. She finds computers rewarding and challenging to study. Her involvement began in high school with installing software and configuring equipment, but has grown to include trying to understand how computers relate to many careers.

John Meylor is a Computer Science major. He thinks that computers offer a open field for anybody to study what they find interesting (unlike physical sciences with larger monetary requirements to event get started, computers can be acquired inexpensively). His interest include cyber-security, particularly as it relates to social interactions.

Sourjya Sinha (Roy) is a Computer Science major with a minor in Informatics. She enjoys the ability to control every detail of a program and hopes to apply her skills to game design.

Priya Padna is a Computer Science major. She was introduced to computers early in her schooling and has been "in love with them ever since." She intends to use her skills to contribute to the field of computer science, and other to apply computer science to their own problems.
