Lecture Notes Eleven: Midterm Make-Up Next Class

On Tuesday we have a midterm makeup in class.

So if you don't want to need the makeup you don't need to come to class.

In that case the lecture is take-home, in the shape of a bonus project:

BONUS PROJECT

  1. Read Appendix 5 in the text (pp. 403-408 in Kirkup)
  2. Read section 7.4 in the text (pp. 285-289 in Kirkup)
  3. Then solve this system of equations:
    2x + y - z = 3
    -x +3z = 2
    x - y + 2z = 1
using matrices. Explain the steps you took.
  4. Read chapter 7.3 in the text (pp. 283-285) and summarize it
  5. Explain the relationship between sections 7.3 and 7.4 in the text

For those taking the Midterm Make-Up here's some information:

  1. The best way to prepare is to review the original midterm exam.
  2. Solve this problem (using Excel) and you are in good shape:

A business that designs, manufactures, and sells women's coats needs information on the sizes of its customers. The heights of American women are normally distributed with mean 65 inches and standard deviation 2.5 inches. Assuming that the customers' heights follow a similar distribution, what fraction of the customers will be between 63 and 70 inches tall?

Remember you can be asked questions about (so review, please):

Good luck and let us know if you need any help preparing.
