Fall Semester 2004

Lab Three: Wednesday November 3, 2004
Date
Wed 3, 2004

Due today
By the end of this lab you should have Homework Assignment Two done.

Here's the text in case you don't have the book yet.

The JRCol.xls workbook contains salary data for 81 faculty members at a junior college.
It also includes information on the number of years employed and gender.
The data were used in a legal action that was eventually settled out of court.
Female professors sought help from statisticians to show that they were underpaid relative to their male counterparts.

  1. Open the workbook and create a scatterplot with Salary on the y-axis and Years on the x-axis.
    Title the scatterplot "Employee Salaries".
Title the y-axis "Salary" and the x-axis "Years Employed".
Remove the legend and gridlines from the plot.
Save the plot as a chart sheet named "Salary Chart".

  2. Break the scatterplot points into two categories based on gender.

  3. Print the scatterplot and interpret the results.
Is there evidence to suggest that
    • the males' salaries are higher than females' salaries
    • for comparable years of employment?

  4. Examine the list of of other variables in the workbook.
Are there other variables in that list
    • which should be taken into account
    • before coming to a conclusion about the relationship between gender and salary?

  5. Save your workbook as E3JRCol.xls and turn it in.

Turn your assignment in OnCourse before the end of the lab.
