Lab Assignment #0: Fun With Shakey
Due by 11:59PM on Wednesday, Jan 20.
Reading Assignment

Read through the text of
the following two lab modules.
In-Lab Work
In your first lab this week, you will go through exercises 1 through 4 of
Lab 1A and exercise 1 of Lab 1B.
Your AI will take you through the process (described in detail below)
for submitting files electronically. For practice, save your solution to
exercise 4 of Lab 1A in a file named Newspaper.txt and then
submit it electronically.
Lab Assignment
For homework, complete the following exercises. The filename to
use for each exercise is given in parentheses. You must use this
filename when saving and submitting your work!
- (Shopping.txt) Lab 1A, Exercise 5.
- (Bowling.txt) Lab 1A, Exercise 6.
- (Farming.txt) Lab 1B, Exercise 2.
- (Mountain.txt) Lab 1B, Exercise 3.
Submitting Your Programs
You will submit your work by electronic mail, as described in the Assignments page. You will send each of
the four files in one (or more) e-mail message(s) to the A201 class
account. Your AI will walk you through this process during lab the
first week, and again during lab the second week (for those students
who either missed the first lab or are still having trouble with the
procedure.)
Essentially, you will use the copy and paste facilities provided by
the NT operating system to create a file containing the program text
from the Shakey application. Then you will mail this file, as an
attachment, using the mailer in your web browser.
- In the Shakey applet, select "ALL" from the "View" menu, and then
highlight the entire text of the program. Enter Ctrl+C, that
is, hold down the control key and press the letter c. The
computer makes a copy of the selected text in memory.
- To bring up the notepad, select "Start", "Programs", "Utilities",
"Accessories", "Notepad". You can either paste using the menu, or
enter Ctrl+V.
- Type two forward slashes // followed by your name on the
first line. (If you'd like a printout of your work, select "Print"
from the "File" menu.)
- Select "Save as" from the "File" menu, and save the program to a
file on the a: drive. Your AI will show you how to
navigate the file system to find the correct location. Make sure
that you use the exact filename specified above!
- Now follow the directions in the assignments page to hand the file(s)
in. For this lab, the subject for your submission messages
would be lab0. Note that there should not be any
space between lab and 0 (a zero, not an uppercase Oh).
