Guidelines for Handing in Assignments.

How to use the "Handin" Program.

Here are the instructions on using the OnCourse Dropbox handin procedure. Be sure you follow the instructions carefully. If you don't test this process before Assignment 1 is due there will not be sufficient time for us to help you solve your problems. If this happens and the OnCourse system does not work, you will be unable to handin Assigment 1 and your score will be 0 (zero). This will also be true for any future assignments where you do not use the dropbox correctly.

THINGS TO KNOW BEFORE YOU START.

  1. Make sure you are at a PC that allows you to login to your OnCourse Account, which may also be where you have saved your files to submit, but is where you must be to submit your assignments.
  2. Make sure all the files you need to hand in are in your OnCourse Personal Workspace OR on the local Hard Drive.
  3. Make sure you type everything below exactly as indicated.

Using the Handin Process.

  1. Login to an IU PC with access to your OnCourse.
  2. Once you are logged into the PC, log into OnCourse using a Web Brawser.

NOTE: Make sure you have actually logged into your OnCourse Workspace before proceeding to the next step!

  3. You must now be sure you have access to your personal A216 OnCourse. Follow these instructions exactly.
  4. Select "Resources" from the left menu pane.
    OnCourse Setup
  5. You should then see something like this:
    OnCourseResources
  6. You may have an A216 folder in your own Workspace, but it is not absolutely required. If you do, these instructions will make it clear how to submit things from your personal Workspace to your A216 Dropbox. The only other location you should attempt to submit files from is the C:\ drive the of the computer you are using. Attempting to submit from any other location MAY NOT work.
  7. Click on the "Show other sites" link you see at the bottom of the main pane. You should see something like the below, although my account has many additional sites. Your account could have many sites other than A216.
    OnCourse Other Sites
  8. NOTE NOTE NOTE. These screen shots are from a previous semester, so the section numbers will not match. HOWEVER, everything else should work exactly as described here. If you have problems, be sure to report them immediately.
  9. In the screen shot ABOVE, the new site that matters is "FA06 BL CSCI A216 23360 Drop Box". Note it is the first one visible with a "+" in the folder icon. 23360 is the number of the Lecture Section and all dropboxes are located in this one folder.
  10. When you open this folder, you may see something like this:
    OnCourseA216Dropbox
  11. You may see less, as I am not sure what permissions each student has. Find your individual dropbox and open it. In this example, I will open the "A216 Instructors" dropbox.
    OnCourseA216OpenDropbox
  12. Once you open your personal dropbox and the 5 folders appears (A1, A2, A3, A4, and Practice), you are ready to handin:
  13. Select the folder for the proper assignment. In my example, I will use the "Practice" folder. Note (above) that something has already been placed in the "A1" and "Practice" folders. I have emptied the "Practice" folder for the rest of this guide. When you open the specific folder and it is empty, you will see nothing but the folder name.

  14. You should know where your files are (OnCourse workspace or C: drive), so you are ready to handin
  15. THE FIRST EXAMPLE DEALS WITH UPLOADING FROM THE C: DRIVE. If you are UPLOADING from your ONCOURSE WORKSPACE, please scroll down the page to Step 22.
  16. Click on the "Add" link for the folder you are in. A new dialog appears. The default for the "Add Item Type" is "File Upload," which is exactly what we want.
    OnCourseA216AddDialog
  17. You should know how many files you need to upload, so set that with the pulldown menu BEFORE you go to choose your files. I will set my example at 6 files. NOTE that a seperate entry area appears for each of the 6 files.
    OnCourseA216Add6Files
  18. Click the "Browse" button.
  19. Locate the folder on the C: drive with your files. Note I have NOT used filenames like those required for your assignments.
    C_DriveFolder
  20. Select each file in turn, click "OK" and it should appear in the "Choose a file" dialog. When you are done, you should be at the bottom of the screen and it should look something like this:
    OnCourse C Upload Ready
  21. When your uploads are complete, you should see something like this:
    OnCourse C Upload Complete
  22. CONGRATULATIONS, you're done.
  23. IF YOUR FILES ARE IN YOUR ONCOURSE WORKSPACE, FOLLOW THE FOLLOWING STEPS.
  24. You have already opened OnCourse, used Resources to open other sites and find your A216 personal dropbox, etc. as described above. What you need to do now is access your Personal OnCourse Workspace folder that holds your A216 files. I've names mine "A216UploadFolder" in these examples. I have opened that folder and the 6 files I need to submit are there. I need to select all 6 and then select "Copy Checked" from the options just below the "Location:" line. NOTE how the appearance changes. These files are now ready to handin by COPYING them to my A216 Dropbox.
    OnCourse Transfer Copy
  25. Click on the "My Workspace Resources" link in the "Location:" field at the top and you should again see all your sites, but every one should now include the "Paste Copied Items" option. If needed, work your way to the specific folder for the specific assignment. In my example, I have moved to A216Instructors/Practice. I'm ready to submit by clicking on "Paste Copied Items. REMEMBER, you MUST be "in" the right folder BEFORE you copy your files.
    OnCourse Ready To Copy
  26. If you succeed, you should see something like this:
    OnCourse Copy Complete
  27. CONGRATULATIONS, you're done. NOTE the result looks exactly the same as when you upload from the C: drive, (tep 20 above).

Make sure you are clear about this process before the end of Lab 6 the week of September 11, 2006. If you are not, we will not be able to help you figure out any problems before Assignment 1 is due on that Sunday night, 9/17/06.

Don't be shy. ASK!

It is important to follow these instructions carefully. If you fail to hand in your homework correctly, you might not receive any credit!
