CSCI A348/548 Syllabus Spring 2001 (Second semester 2000-2001)

Here's what we want to accomplish in this class:

Jan 9-11	1	Create accounts, become familiar with Unix.
Jan 16-18	2	Install Apache, start Perl and Java reviews.
Jan 23-25	3	Learn basic HTTP, HTML with forms, basic CGI.
Jan 30-Feb 1	4	Learn CGI.pm and wrap-up CGI.
Feb 6-Feb 8	5	Install Tomcat and start Java servlets and JSP.
Feb 13-Feb 15	6	Servlets and JSP continued. Client-side Java: applets.
Feb 20-Feb 22	7	A simple web chat application using Java applets and Java servlets.
Feb 27-Mar 1	8	Client-side Javascript. A shopping cart application using JS and CGI.
Mar 6- 8	9	Mar 6: MIDTERM EXAM (in class). Wrap-up of first part of class.
Mar 13-15		SPRING BREAK
Mar 20-22	10	mySQL database access with Java (JDBC) and Perl (DBI)
Mar 27-29	11	Introduction to XML. Group project starts.
Apr 3- 5	12	Stage one of the project: to be detailed later.
Apr 10-12	13	Stage two of the project: to be detailed later.
Apr 17-19	14	Stage three of the project: to be detailed later.
Apr 24-26	15	Security issues and course wrap-up.
May 3		FINAL EXAM (7:15pm-9:15pm)

Please note:

• there will be about five small projects (homework assignments) due in lab, that need to be posted on the web under a protected directory as will be explained in class.

• there will be one large project (same for all) that will be coordinated in lecture and that will be split in three stages. These stages will be due in lab, at the right time, after Spring Break.

So overall you will have:

• about eight assignments, to be turned in labs at the right time

• one midterm and one final exam (closed-book)
