  • Assignment Guidelines

    • For 2008, assignments should be undertaken in a group of 2-3 persons.
    • For 2008, assignments must be a single file, submitted electronically (in PDF format) through Oncourse.
    • We must be able to easily view and print your submission. PDF is the only acceptable format for submission. Note: scanned handwritten submissions are not acceptable.
    • Put the names and userids of all group members on the first page of your submission
    • Please name your submission "userid_asgX.pdf" where userid corresponds to the person who actually posts the solution to Oncourse, and X is the assignment number.
    • Late policy: you may hand in your assignment solutions up to 48 hours late for a 5% reduction in credit. No solutions will be accepted after the solutions have been posted.
    • Assignment Ownership: Each group's writeup should be entirely their own work. Other sources may be consulted, but the final writeup must belong only to the group claiming credit and must be entirely in your own words. If there is significant contribution by other sources to the content of the assignment, you should explicitly reference the external sources.

    File Conversions at IUB

For help uploading at IUB and navigating the various computing systems, see the Knowledge Base (http://kb.indiana.edu) or the CS system FAQs (http://www.cs.indiana.edu/Facilities/FAQ/).

Ensure you test your PDF file before you submit it to see that it displays the way you want us to see it!
    • Adobe PostScript to Adobe PDF
      1. Upload your file to your filespace on the CS UNIX cluster.
      2. Run Adobe distiller (command: "distill") on your file to produce PDF output. For example, if your input PostScript file is cmw_asgX.ps you would run the command
        distill cmw_asgX.ps
to produce cmw_asgX.pdf in the same directory.

    • LaTeX DVI to Adobe PDF
      1. Upload your DVI file (and any pictures that it needs) to your filespace on the CS UNIX cluster if they're not already there.
      2. Translate your DVI file to PostScript using the UNIX command "dvips". For example, if your DVI file is named cmw_asgX.dvi you would run the command
        dvips -f cmw_asgX.dvi >cmw_asgX.ps
to produce cmw_asgX.ps in the same directory.
      3. Follow the steps for converting PostScript to PDF (above).

    • MS Word .doc to Adobe PDF
      1. Install the driver for a standard PostScript printer on your PC or Mac (if you don't already have one). If you do not yourself have a PostScript printer, find out the make and model number of one of the CS HP laser printers and install a "fake" printer of that type on to your PC or Mac. (In other words, you don't need the actual printer, you just need Windows to be able to use the driver. This means you will need to use the manual "add a printer" dialog in the appropriate Windows wizard.)
      2. Print your Word document to a file using the PostScript printer driver. On a PC, the output will have the extension ".prn". On a Mac, I have no idea what will be produced. However, on either OS, the result file should be ordinary PostScript, so you should rename it to have the appropriate extension (".ps").
      3. Follow the directions for translating PostScript to PDF (above).

    • Other conversions
      1. Some combination of the above conversions may work for you. Other than that, you're on your own.
