Class participation is a very important component of your experience in CSCI C102 - Great Ideas in Computing. You will not improve your understanding of the course's content and its affect on your life unless you participate in class discussions. Class discussions are designed for all to share their ideas and opinions about readings and experiences. We will be discussing areas ranging from globalization to ethics in information technology. Topics that will be covered are:
As mentioned above, the nature of this course is performance through class participation. You will be particpating in discussions through your contribution about our assigned readings, keeping an opinion diary, writing two-page write ups about lecture topics, and performing laboratory projects. Because others in this course will be depending on your contributions to this course, you must come to class and arrive on time. Tardiness will not be accepted due to its nature of disturbing your classmates. You are college students and adults and therefore I will treat you as such. Please be at class and on time.
Attendance is a primary key to passing this course and any other course you might enroll at IU. You will be unable to pass this course or gain an understanding of technologies impact on our lives without being at class. It is also important to understand that attendance is worth 30% of your final grade. I view it as very very important! If, for some catastrophic reason, you are unable to attend a particular class day, it is your responsibility to let me know beforehand and/or as soon as possible afterwards.
