C241: Class Policies

Fall 2009

Policies

The information contained in this page is not optional. You are responsible for conducting yourself in accordance with the rules below. Ignorance of a rule stated or referred to here is not grounds for excusal. If you have questions regarding a policy, ask one of us before you act.

Grading

Grades are assigned on a straight 90%, 80%, etc... scale. Grades are weighted as follows:

C241 Grade Distribution
  • Assignments & Reading: There will be 10 assignments (25%) and 12 reading quizes (5%), for a total of 30% of the final grade.
  • Midterm Exams: There will be two in-class exams, each worth 20% of the final grade.
  • Final Exam: The final exam will be worth 25% of the final grade.
  • Attendance: Daily attendance (including attendance at recitation) will be worth 5% of the final grade.

H241 Grade Distribution
  • Assignments & Reading: There will be 10 assignments (20%) and 12 reading quizes (5%), for a total of 25% of the final grade.
  • Midterm Exams: There will be two in-class exams, each worth 20% of the final grade.
  • Final Exam: The final exam will be worth 20% of the final grade.
  • Project: Each student will complete an individual project applying discrete math to a practical problem in CS, worth 15% of the final grade.

Homework & Reading Assignments

There will be 11 homework assignments. Your lowest homework grade will be dropped, with the remaining 10 each worth 2.5% of your final grade. Graded homework will (barring extenuating circumstances) be returned by the monday following the due date.
Homework must be turned in at the beginning of lecture on the due date. Any homework turned in after lecture will be considered late. Late homework assignments will be docked %10 per day, up to 2 days late. Late homework should be turned in directory to the AI or left in the AI's mailbox in the main office, LH215. If you use the mailbox, you must email the AI to notify her that your work has been turned in . Homework may not be turned in more than two days late for credit (unless there is an exceptionally convincing, well-documnted medical excuse). Homework which is turned in more than two days late may be evaluated (at the AI's discretion), but it will recieve no credit.
You may work with other students on homework assignments for this course, but you must write the solution in your own words... no copying! You must also cite the names of each person you worked with at the top of your assignment. Failure to do so can be considered plagarism (see the department's academic integrity policy: http://www.cs.indiana.edu/Academics/integrity.html). It is always safe to discuss the assignments with the teaching team, and you may include any results of these discussions without explicit reference.
In addition to the homework assignments, there will be a very brief reading assignment each week. On days that reading assignments are due, there will be a short quiz over the reading at the beginning of lecture. These quizes will make up 5% of your final grade.

Exams

No notes are allowed during exams. Except during extreme circumstances, you must schedule make-ups in advance with an appropriate documented excuse. "I overslept" will not be acceptable. Likewise, forgetting to schedule a make-up when you have a planned absence is also unacceptable.
Note that 65% of your grade comes from your performance on the exams. The exams will be held in the lecture room and proctored accordingly. It should be obvious, but group work is not permited on the exams. The exams must be entirely your own work. If you are caught cheating during a C241 exam, the penalty will be immediate failure of the course and a report to the IUB Office of Student Ethics. Note that such reports of this type of incident are usually grounds for expulsion from the University.

Honors Projects

Students registered for H241 will be required to complete an individual project worth 15% of their course grade, in addition to meeting all the requirements of C241. Details, including regular announcements and milestone dates, will be posted on the H241 page.

Withdrawal

Make sure you know the last day to drop a course or withdraw from all courses with an automatic 'W'. For Fall 2009, this date is Wednesday, October 28th. After that date, a student may withdraw only with the permission of his or her dean. This approval is normally only for urgent reasons related to extended illness or equivalent distress.

Incomplete Grade

An incomplete ('I') final grade will be given only by prior arrangement in exceptional circumstances conforming to university and departmental policy which requires, among other things, that the student have completed the bulk of the work required for the class with a passing grade, and that the remaining work can be made up within 30 days after the semester.
