Introduction

The Computer Science Department believes that real-world experience is a valuable part of an educational program. The department therefore provides two ways for students to obtain academic credit for their work experience. Because there are similarities and important differences between these courses, this web page serves both Y398 and Y399.

Obtaining Internships

Internships are normally obtained by going through the Internship Opportunities Program, but students are welcome to secure their own internship and still take advantage of the wide range of services offered by the IOP. All of their workshops and advising services are available to guide you as you collaborate with your employer to develop a job description, resolve concerns, and so on.

Approval

Students interested in a Y398 or Y399 course should send email to the department's director of undergraduate studies, DUGS@cs.indiana.edu, containing:

For Y398, if the information provided is sufficient for approval, a reply email indicating approval will be sent with a copy to the undergraduate advisor, who will authorize registration provided the student meets the grade requirement noted below.

For Y399, an interview with the director of undergraduate studies will be scheduled as appropriate upon receipt of the above message. Final registration authorization requires:

Catalog description

(3-6 cr.) P: sophomore standing and approval of the department. Students receive credit for selected career-related, full-time work. Evaluation by employer and faculty member. Does not count toward computer science major requirements. Total credit cannot exceed 6 hours for any combination of computer science courses Y390, Y391, Y398, Y399, C390, and C391.

Grade requirement

A grade of B or better in Computer Science C211 and C212 is required.

Employment requirement

Employment must involve professional activity representative of computer science.

Deliverables

Upon completion of the employment covered by the course authorization the student shall submit to the director of undergraduate studies a brief (about three page) report on the internship experience along with a letter from the employment supervisor indicating satisfactory completion of responsibilities. The report should be submitted by the last day of classes in the semester of registration to avoid receiving an incomplete.

Y399 Project in Professional Practice

Catalog description

(3-6 cr.) P: two of C311, C335, C343, or honors versions; and approval of major department. The student designs, programs, verifies, and documents a project assignment selected in consultation with an employer and the department. Total credit cannot exceed 6 hours for any combination of computer science courses Y390, Y391, Y398, Y399, C390, and C391.

Grade requirement

To insure that the student is prepared to tackle a problem at the professional level, a grade of B or better in Computer Science in two of C311, C335, and C343 is required.

Employment requirement

Employment must involve a project for which the student has substantial independent involvement and close supervision by a computing professional with suitable computer science background.

Deliverables

Upon completion of the project the student shall submit to the project's sponsoring faculty member a report of about 3,000-4,000 words in accordance with the Y399 report guidelines. The employment supervisor shall also submit directly to the sponsoring faculty member an evaluation of the student's performance. If practicable, the faculty sponsor may also benefit from a demonstration of the project software. The faculty sponsor then submits a grade report to the undergraduate secretary. The report should be submitted by the last day of classes in the semester of registration to avoid receiving an incomplete.
