Click here for schedule information for the next exam in ascii text. Exams take place each fall; exact dates are normally posted at the end of the spring semester. To take the exam, you need to fill out the online application, which is opened in the summer. A FAQ file answers some questions about policies and procedures.


Written Examination Syllabi

  • Exam I: covers CHOICE OF ONE: Exam IA: Foundations, OR IB: Algorithms. The syllabi are available in Qual Exam IA: Foundations and Qual Exam IB: Algorithmics.
  • Exam II: covers Operating Systems. The current syllabus was first posted on June 7, 2002.
  • The books cited in these syllabi are on reserve at Swain Hall Library.

    Sample Written Examinations

  • Examples of the current Qual Exam IA (Foundations) format are in foundations. Aug06.pdf is the most recent example. Examples of the current Qual Exam IB (Algorithmics) format are in algorithmics. Aug06.pdf is the most recent example.
  • Examples of the current Qual II exam are available in systems. Aug06.ps is the most recent example. Samples through Aug02 reflect the current format. The previous Qual Exam II format had two parts, one based on P536 and the other based on B543, which is no longer covered. Samples of this exam are archived in the same directory.
