Recycling
Recycling in the Department
The department recycles cans, paper, coffee grounds, and compost
items. Can boxes are located throughout the building and in some of
the labs. White paper bins are located next to each printer. In
addition, there are bins for colored paper and magazines in the
mailroom and copier room. The bins are labelled with the types of
items you can put in each can. A plastic box for coffee grounds and
other compost items such as fruit peels can also be found in the
copier room.
We encourage people to save paper by using one of the many printer
options for multi-column and double-sided printing. For a guide to
printing, click here.
Recycling in Bloomington
If you live in or rent a private home, you get curbside recycling
pickup once a month for aluminum and tin cans and glass. If you live
in an apartment, you have to handle your own recycling. There are
numerous places around town where you can take recycleables. Most of
the supermarket parking lots have large bins for cans, glass,
newspapers and some plastics. Often, the supermarkets have bins
inside where you can recycle plastic shopping bags.
The Monroe County Recycling Center, located on South Rogers a few
blocks south of the Hospital, takes cans, glass, many plastics,
cardboard, papers, newsprint, magazines, styrofoam, etc. It is open
Monday-Saturday during the day (phone 332-9253).
Lawn waste such as grass and leaves will not be taken without
yard-waste disposal tags which can be purchased (.50 apiece) at most
supermarkets, Bloomingfoods, and Target. You can also purchase large
yard waste disposal bags at these stores in case you have more than
will fit in a garbage can.
There are also places in town that will take car batteries, oil, and
unwanted appliances. If you want a guide to Monroe County Recycling,
talk to Ann or check below (hopefully the guide will be on-line a
couple of weeks after classes start).
