Hi all,

I just got xfaces working. I've noticed one quirk and I was wondering
if any of you have seen/fixed it:

the annotations seem to start one character to the right inside the
rectangle that holds the text. This is quite evident if you change the
background color from white to, say red, because that one character's
background stays white. I wouldn't mind so much, except that the
rectangle clips the last character of the annotation.

I compiled xfaces on an HP-UX running A.09.05 A 9000/712 with the XPM stuff.

Any advice?

Thanks in advance,

Bret

I posed a question yesterday about a small white line or extra spacing
along the left side of the annotations...

After a little more dinking around with xfaces, I found that it also
covered the left side of unshaped images, not just the annotations.

Here's a small xwd (gzipped and uuencoded) that shows what I'm talking about.

Could the problem have anything to do with the window manager (fvwm-2.0pl39)?

Thanks for any hints,

Bret

Greetings,
      Anthony's Icon Library http://www.sct.gu.edu.au/~anthony/icons/
and AIcons WWW Images http://www.cit.gu.edu.au/images/Images.html
now has some mailing lists associated with it for discussions and
announcements.

     aicons@cit.gu.edu.au General Discussions about AIcons
     aicons_announce@cit.gu.edu.au Announcements about AIcons (rare)

The ``aicons'' list is for general discussion on Anthony's Icon Library
and in particular X window and WWW icons which is what this library is all
about. (ASIDE: This library is NOT a PC icon library and never will be).

``aicons_announce'' however is only offical release announcements from
myself (moderated list) and mail is send to people in both the above mailing
lists as well as the following mailing lists.

   xpm-talk@babar.inria.fr X Pixmap Library Discussions
   pbmplus@lists.best.com PbmPlus (NetPbm) Mailing List
faces@cs.indiana.edu Faces Library (for mail faces) List

I will only be mailing to this list a couple of times per year. This
being one and the Offical Release of version 1.8 of AIcons in a few weeks
time for this year.

To (un)subscribe to these mailing list send subscribe / unsubscribe
mail requests in the body of the mail to

           majordomo@cit.gu.edu.au

EG:
     unsubscribe aicons
     subscribe aicons_announce

If anything is not understood by the majordomo server a help file will be
returned to you.

PS:
As mentioned above AIcons will be offically releasing version 1.8
of the library for the benift of the FTP and WWW Mirrors of this library.
A special announcement is mailed to a known mirror coordinators a week
or two in advance of the general announcement.

If you have (or know of) a publically accessable copy of AIcons or the WWW
images, mail me so that I can note its existance and create a link from
the various parts of the library, before the offical release of version 1.8.

NOTE:
The Example Images Pages for the WWW Images is no longer available on
the main server. However the pages are still available for use on other
WWW Mirrors of this part of the library.

Thank you for your time, and any help, suggestions you may have, I hope that
this mailing list proves useful and helpful for all concerned.

Anthony's Icon Library (version 1.8)
This is a large collection of X window Icons for general use by the X
comunity and WWW Servers. Few icon libraries are devoted to the X Window
System (though now there are an extremely large number of WWW collections)
and this is the reason this library was started in 1991.

The icon images found inside this collection are small (generally less
than 100 by 100 pixel across) images that can be used for

        * Program icons for general use by window managers
        * Buttons / Widgets / Gadgets in X window programs
        * Document types for a desktop program (like xdtm)
        * World Wide Web; buttons, indicators, lines, etc.
        * walls, landscapes, space ships, and other objects for games

This collection does NOT contain any `large' pictures, though smaller root
window tile patterns are present. Nor does it contain `junky' icon images
you often find in other libraries. It is also NOT a library of clipart.

The library has been pre-sorted into various catagories of size, style and
usage which is also different to many `grab-bag' style icon libraries in
the world.

These features is what makes this collection different to other icon
collections, and judging by comments recieved, well liked by users of
the library.

ORGANIZATION

The library's organization is basically by intended usage.
The icons are stored into 3 major catagories,
desc General descriptive icons for general use. (icons)
appl Icons for use within specific applications.
prog Icons for programming and other purposes.

And a couple of minor catagories
     docs General information files.
large Icons which are too large for the library (but included).
support A collection of support scripts, config files, etc...

MAJOR CHANGES

Thanks to the continued development on the World Wide Web, a real
flood of icons have become available, usally one or two icons from
numerous sites around the globe. All icons downloaded are re-colored to
fit the standard color table used by the library and probably edited a
small amount.

As part of this the WWW area ``appl/www'' has also grown comsiderably.
The icons stored in this section are in X pixmap format, which most WWW
browsers can read. The large growth of the section has also forced it to
split into a number of sub-directories of icon types. WebMasters are
urged however to convert these icons to the GIF format for their own http
servers OR download the latest set of pre-converted images from

Also associtated with the World Wide Web is a set of mathematical
symbols, super/subscrips and greek alphabet created by Karen Strom.
These are normally converted into the GIF format and installed into
a special WWW images directory "/maths" for use within mathematical
documents converted to HTML from LaTeX.

Also the section ``prog/bits'' for Bits and Pieces of Icons has been
divided into two new sections ``prog/bw-bits'' and ``prog/cl-bits''
for Black and White, and Color Bits 'n' Pieces respectively.

OTHER PROGRAMS

The following programs and packages are recommended by me to make this
icon library more enjoyable.

  X Pixmap Library ftp://koala.inria.fr/pub/xpm
  XbmBrowser 5.1 ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/utilities/xbmbrowser5.1.tar.gz
  PbmPlus (netpbm) ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/utilities/netpbm-1mar1994.p1.tar.gz
  CTwm ftp://ftp.x.org/contrib/window_managers/ctwm-3.3.tar.Z
  Xv 3.10a ftp://ftp.cis.upenn.edu/pub/xv
  Xv Xpm Patch ftp://koala.inria.fr/pub/xpm/xvxpm.c
  XLoadImage ftp://ftp.x.org/R5contrib/xloadimage.4.1.tar.gz

NOTE: the new release of XbmBrowser which is a must for viewing the AIcons
library as a whole. Without this program this library would probably just
not exist.

I am also eagerly awaiting the arrival of the offical PbmPlus package
from Jef Poskanzer. But with the time he is taking (nearly two years now)
I am not holding my breath.

Thanks for your Attention.

Up to today, I've been using good ole' faces, which supports B&W,
48x48 images. It shows one icon per sender (with compression), and
underneath the icon, the user name. Clicking on the icon, the user
name is replaced with the number of mails from him/her
(compression).

I'm looking at xfaces now because I want color icons, but I miss the
user name - this way I have to actually remember the association
between a particular icon and its user. The computer does this much
better that I do, so why should I?

I've read the man page and there is no mention about such a feature.

Anyone?

Thanks.

My xfaces puts the username and the message count both below the
pixmap. These things are called "annotations" in xfaces parlance. They
just appear, as far as I can tell.

I do have the following in my XFaces app-defaults file to change the
fg/bg colors, but that's it:

  XFaces.annotation1.foreground: white
  XFaces.annotation1.background: black
  XFaces.annotation2.foreground: white
  XFaces.annotation2.background: black

  XFaces.unknownAnnotation1.foreground:	white
  XFaces.unknownAnnotation1.background:	black
  XFaces.unknownAnnotation2.foreground:	white
  XFaces.unknownAnnotation2.background:	black

Here's what you're looking for:

xfaces*mail.annotation1: user
xfaces*mail.annotation2: count

I also use:
xfaces*mail.annotation3: *subject:

So I can see the subject of the last piece of mail from the user.

Odd; I don't need that.

Ah, I see. These things are included by default in the XFaces resource
file which is supposed to be installed when you install XFaces; from
that file:

  XFaces.mail.annotation1:	user
  XFaces.mail.annotation2:	count
  XFaces.mail.unknownAnnotation1:	user
  XFaces.mail.unknownAnnotation2:	count

so the original questioner's installation of xfaces probably didn't work
completely, and the XFaces resource file didn't get into
/usr/lib/X11/app-defaults.

I'm exploring xfaces in order to use it instead of good ole' faces,
and I ran into two problems:
1. I want to display all mail sent to a mailing list (to which I
subscribe) with one icon. The provided app-defaults files says to
use this resource:

XFaces.beforeImageBindings:	\
	To:	xannounce@x.org: x XAnnounce\n\
	Cc:	framer: window Framers

but two things are not clear to me from this and the man page:
a) How to specify the regular expression. Seems to me that the
'x.org' above can match not only 'x.org', but also 'xyorg',
   'x1org', etc. Shouldn't it say 'x\.org'?
b) The filespecs 'x' and 'window' - how does xfaces look for the
   files?

2) Seems like the new xfaces looks at each mail header in the spool
file and displays only new, unread mail messages. So if I invoke
elm to look at the mail subjects only, all the messages in the
spool will no longer be displyed by xfaces. Old xfaces does not
behave like that - it displays everything that is in the spool
file, no matter what the message status is.
This really is annoying when I have many messages in the spool
file and would like to fine-tune my .Xdefaults to affect xfaces
   behavior.

Thanks in advance

1. In the section describing resource Xfaces.imageTypes:
Shaped xpm file names is wrong. It says "face-shaped.xpm". Should
   be "face-shape.xpm" (IMHO).
2. In the section describing resource Xfaces.commandSearch:
   "resoiurce" --> "resource"
3. In the section describing resource Xfaces.afterCommandBindings:
   This paragraph:

"If the \fI<field name>\fP is specified as \fI*\fP then all headers are
tested. If the \fI<field name>\fP begins with a \| (like
\fI\|Subject:\fP or \fI\|*\fP) then the search is case insensitive."

Is displayed incorrectly by Unix 'man' command - the vertical bars
disappear. I suspect that nroff command treats it as a special
character.

I just installed picon and xfaces at this site, and have some
questions:

- I'd like to use the x-face header in preference to `unknown' matches
in the picons database, but not in preference to exact matches. Can
this be done?

- To make xfaces use the shape extension, it seems like the picon must
be named `face-shaped.xpm'. However, the picons database doesn't seem
to use this convention. Is there a way to force xfaces to use shape
even if the picon is named `face.xpm'?

- The source looked a bit old, is xfaces actively being maintained?

+---------- xfaces questions ----------
| - To make xfaces use the shape extension, it seems like the picon must
| be named `face-shaped.xpm'. However, the picons database doesn't seem
| to use this convention. Is there a way to force xfaces to use shape
| even if the picon is named `face.xpm'?

Yes, many xpm files in the picons databases use the transparent color, so
you get effective shaped icons without having to have -shaped filenames.

| - The source looked a bit old, is xfaces actively being maintained?

Not to my knowledge.

I wish it was so, but I only get transparent/shaped icons if I rename
the face.xpm file to face-shaped.xpm.

Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade from the good ole' xfaces to version 3.3. I've
successfully compiled & linked it, but I have two problems:
1. Whenever there is a mail message with an X-Face header, xfaces
dumps core.
Here's the relevant part from my .Xdefaults:

   XFaces.imageSearch:	x-face\n\
			facedb\n\
			beforeImage\n\
			resource\n\
			afterImage

2. I can't make xfaces identify mailing lists. I've followed the
example given the XFaces.ad file, but I get a separate icon for each
mail message, while old xfaces correctly compresses all of them to
one icon.
Here's the .Xdefaults part:

   XFaces.beforeImageBindings: \
	To:	xemacs@cs.uiuc.edu:	xemacs-request Xemacs\n\
	To:	xemacs-request: xemacs-request Xemacs\n\
	Cc:	xemacs@cs.uiuc.edu:	xemacs-request Xemacs

Anyone?

Should the submitted picons be exactly 48x48, or are they allowed to
be smaller?

I have converted a bunch of gifs to 48 pixels high xpm format, but
since the gifs was taller than they were wide, the xpm files are less
than 48 pixels wide. xfaces has no problems with this.

If the answer is no, do you have any hints for how to automatically
fill out the borders with transparent?

Should I submit all the pictures from my old department, even though
most are students and many will finish this summer?

If they're submitted smaller, I'll convert them to 48x48 before
incorporating them into the databases.

I use 'pnmcenter' from the picons "bits" scripts.

You can if you like. Even old addresses can still be useful to represent
archived mail and news messages.

i recall that when reading the faces archives a while ago, that
there was some discussion of `remote' face programs. something
that would let you get faces from distant machines, rather than
having to keep the entire database locally. did anything ever
come of this? (i don't consider XFace: headers to be the be best
method).

Not really, that I know of. I'd consider it an open project. My picons
search server is a step in that direction (it can be used to retrieve
individual picons by various specs across the net using HTTP), but only
a step. Of course, client support for whatever protocol is used or
developed would be essential.

Agreed, especially with MIME available these days.

So, this mailing list is real. Since the time I subscribed, I don't
think I have received anything!!
Anyway, here a repeat of my problems with the 3.3 version:

1. Having mails with X-Faces headers crashes xfaces. I worked around
it by removing the search for it from imageSearch:

   XFaces.imageSearch:	facedb\n\
			beforeImage\n\
			resource\n\
			afterImage

2. I can't get the mailing list support to work. I copied from the
xfaces.ad and modified to this, but it doesn't do anything.
When I compile with -DBINDING_DEBUG I don't see that the rules
   are checked.

I had just asked Stephen this question (in a private msg), but perhaps
others might be interested:

My company is finding an increasing need for something akin to a generalized
"icon server" or "small-graphic server", or whatever you might call a
server that sends a relatively small amount of graphic data in a single
*packet* using datagram transport technology.

Has anyone had any experience or knowledge of such a beast, preferably
running over UDP?

Is anyone out there interested in having such a beast? If so, are there
any other requirements you might have, other than the simplistic description
above?

I developed some years ago a full package to solve the
problem. Everything was transparent to user AFTER correct
installation in /etc/inetd.conf and /etc/services, of
course... Gotta check my very old student account to know
if something remains there !

This patch fixes the problem in the section describing the resource
"XFaces.afterCommandBindings". The vertical bar ('|') was not
escaped and thus got eaten by the nroff. There are two occurances of
this problem.

Errors-To: faces-request@cs.indiana.edu

I've found some errors & typos in xfaces.man:
1. In the section describing resource Xfaces.imageTypes:
Shaped xpm file names is wrong. It says "face-shaped.xpm". Should
   be "face-shape.xpm".
2. In the section describing the resource Xfaces.commandSearch:
   "resoiurce" --> "resource".
3. In the section describing resource Xfaces.afterCommandBindings:
The vertical bar (pipe) is not escaped, so it gets eaten by nroff.
4. In the section documenting the "XFaces.useCommands" resource.

This patch supersedes my previous post, so if you've applied the
previous patch, please revert to the original and apply this one.

I'm not able to configure the xfaces to work with sound.

xfaces is compiled with the audio library but without the bucket
option. (SunOS 4.1.4, SS20)

I'm not running the ausun server, due that it cracks other
programs. (like XEmacs).

Any hints?

Very good. But you don't need to go to perl...
Also X Bitmap files can also have C Program Comments and
Hotspot Information before what you assume is the third line

Oh well. Feel free to patch it.

It works on the output of bitmap(1), is good enough for most people who want
to draw their own x-faces. They certainly ought to have _something_ more
useful than the 27 line README file that comes with the package...

Principal disadvantage highlighted. Perl is more common than pbmplus.

It would appear you have got two different definitions for malloc()
and realloc() declared. I noticed in the CHANGES-v1.6 file, the following
change made for v1.5.2:

         * Added #include "faces.h" to address.y so that realloc() would be
           declared.

You might want to try removing the #include for "faces.h" from address.y
on your system and see if that fixes it.

Alternatively you might like to try using XFaces, which supercedes the
faces program. I've included an old announcement for this that I squirrelled
away. I suspect it's archived at ftp.cs.indiana.edu somewhere under pub/faces
as well.

I just sent this to comp.windows.x......

This is to announce XFaces version 3.1. This is mainly a bugfix release but
there is one notable new feature:

	- You can now choose what is used for annotation for mail items.
In the previous release this was hard coded to be the user name
and count of messages. Now you can choose from user, host,
	  user@host, count, any header.

You can get XFaces from the following:

	Host File
	ftp.x.org	contrib/xfaces-3.1.tar.Z
	ftp.clark.net	pub/liebman/xfaces-3.1.tar.Z

For those that don't know about XFaces, here is the blurb:

			     XFaces 3.1
			Christopher B. Liebman
			liebman@zod.clark.net
			    March 6, 1994

What is XFaces?

XFaces is a program that will display an image for each
piece of mail in your mail box. This lets you know at a
glance who you have mail from. XFaces starts out (when you
have no mail) looking like a color xbiff. As you receive
mail XFaces becomes a column of mail images. Some of XFaces
    features:

      - Both mono and color images.

      - Optional Shaped window support with both xpm and xbm.

      - Sound support using the NetAudio protocol. The NetAudio server
currently supports Sun's SparcStation (SunOS 4.1.X and Solaris 2.2),
SGI's Indigo and NCD MCX X terminals running NCDware 3.1 or later.

      - Face images can be "compressed" so that each image will only
show up once on your display. This way, if you receive 30 messages
from one user, list or whatever the image will only show up once.

      - You can use regular expressions to search any headers to choose
images and sounds or ignore that mail message compleatly. This
lets you specify an image/sound for mail that comes from a
mailing list or ignore mail that you have already seen but
	left in your system mailbox.

      - Compatibility support for Rich Burridge's faces program. This
includes the ability to run user command to generate the image
	list.

      - Support for POP mailboxes.

      - XFaces can kick off shell commands based upon mailbox
contents. You could have yourself paged when a high priorty
	item needs your attention.

      - XFaces can run external filters to convert images into Xpm
so that image formats that XFaces does not understand can
	be used.

      - The annotations for mail items include username, hostname,
count, user@host, the contents of any header.

XFaces is based on the Xt Intrinsics (-lXt) and the Athena
Widget set (-lXaw). To build in Xpm support you need the
xpm library (-lxpm) version 3.2 or later. To build in the
sound support you will need NetAudio 1.1 or later. Both the xpm
and the NetAudio distributions and publicly available with anon
ftp from ftp.x.org in the contrib directory. If you want X-Face
header support you will want James Ashton's compface library
available from from ftp.clark.net in pub/liebman/compface.tar.Z.

Whats new in this version?

Changes in version 3.1: 3/7/1994

A few bug fixes. (one had caused a SEG Fault on many machines)

User control of the mail annotatons.

The default values for the imageTypes and imageSearch resources
should reflect the options that the user compiled in.

Changes in version 3.0: 2/24/1994

The major changes were to add compatibility support for
    Rich Burridge's "faces" program:

	- Per-face shell commands.

	- X-Face: header support.

	- facedb image/sound search. (the way faces finds
	  images)

	- User list commands.

	- Labling of images. The user name and the number of messages
	  are displayed.

	- The following faces options are supported:
	      -f <facedbPath>
	      -e <listCommand>
	      -p <update time>
	      -c <# of columns>
	      -h <image height>
	      -w <image width>
	      -s <mail spool file>

	- POP mailbox support. (still primitive with respect to
	  user authentication but functional!)

	- A new Tiled widget so that the image list can be N
columns and to allow for the "Rows=nnn Cols=nnn" line
	  from a user command.

	- Full control of the order and imagetype/paths of searches.
	  The search types are:

		- beforeImage,
		  afterImage,
		  beforeSound,
		  afterSound,
		  beforeCommand,
afterCommand: These are regular expression searches
					on the mail headers.
		- resource: Lookup image/sound in X resources.
		- facedb: Lookup image/sound in "faces" style
					database.
		- x-face: X-Face: style header.

	- Searchs are done for images, sounds and shell commands.

	- Much improved shape support.

Changes in version 2.3: 1/20/1994

Compleatly rewrote the mail header parsing. Now all headers
    are searched.

Changed slightly the before/after image/sound bining format.
Now you use three parts instead of to. The new format is:
	    <header name> <whitespace> <pattern> <:> <image/sound file>

Fixed a bug in the image code where a pixmap value was
uninitialized and caused X error on some machines (machines where
the unitialized value happened to be "None" worked! others did
    not).

Changes in version 2.2: 1/14/1994

Added new resource ignoreMessageBindings. This allows you to
    have some messages ignored.

Made the "Status:" header one of the headers that is searched
with the bindings resources. This allows people who like to keep
200 to 300 messages in their system mailbox to only see/hear from
messages that they have not seen yet.

Made a small change to faces.h to allow for SystemV machines.
I added macros for bcopy, bzero, index and rindex.

Improved mail parsing. Before if there was no subject header
xfaces could be fooled by a line in the body starting with Subject:.

I can't get the mailing list support to work. I copied from the
xfaces.ad and modified to this, but it doesn't do anything.
When I compile with -DBINDING_DEBUG I don't see that the rules

I've worked around the problem by telling xfaces to look at the
'From ' header instead of the 'From: ', but it's an ugly kludge that
sometimes does not work so well.

Anyone?

Hi, guys. I'm not sure which of you I should send this to, but I found
a one line bug, a typo really, in the source to xfaces-3.3 available
from Steve's archive, and have a 1 line patch that fixes it.

In the code to construct the mailitem list from a command output, the
tail of the list isn't updated properly, which causes xfaces to dump core
when the list changes significantly. (Specifically, TheMailItemsTail is
NULL when TheMailItems isn't, which causes a NULL to be dereferenced.)
Here's the patch, do what you want with it.

I'm not on the faces mailing list, so my apologies if this has been
posted before.

I've recently upgraded to xfaces, after using faces for a long time. I
haven't had time to get netaudio to compile (SunOS 5.5), so I haven't
got audio support compiled in. Is there any way that xfaces can be
made to beep, like faces does, when new mail comes in? All I had
in my .facesrc file was "set bell = 2". Right now, I'm running both,
which is a bit of overkill....

[ 'scuse the spelling. :-) ]

Short of mangling all my .xpm images with pbm scripts, is there
any way of preventing xfaces from snarfing the entire colourmap
on startup? By default, xfaces runs from my .xinitrc. When I come
to start up netscape, I usually get lots of complaints, because it can't
find enough colours. If I run them the other way around, I don't
get this problem. Of course, xfaces doesn't look so nice, but at least
*it* doesn't complain at me.

I'm aware of using alternative colour maps, but (a) the flashing drives
me mad, and (b) by chance, the colours assigned to the rest of the screen
make my eyes water. :-)

Is there a convention for dealing with multiple email addresses per
picon? For example, I have two (work and home) that I use on a regular
basis, and a third (vanity subdomain) which I use occasionally. I've
submitted an xpm for my work address; should I resubmit the same for the
other two?

I imagine this would be useful information to put in the FAQ...

| Is there a convention for dealing with multiple email addresses per picon?

Not a good one, I'm afraid. 'faces' supports table files listing
equivalent addresses, but not all other picons-using software supports
them. One can use filesystem links in the picons databases, or just
install the picon in multiple places. I don't really use any of these
in the distributed picons databases since they make them unmanageable
for me (tables or links), or are wasteful (multiple copies).

So, for domain picons, I insist that multiple copies not be identical,
but distinguish themselves in at least some small way. For user picons,
I don't encourage more than one picon, but have more flexibility here,
particularly if the multiple picons are independent and distinguished.

Hi, all!

I've been working on a custom perl script, loosely based on the distributed
ones, to monitor procmail-created inboxes for each of my mailing lists. It
works pretty well, except that it dies about every fourth time it checks
for new mail.

It appears to be that there's mail being delivered at that time, but I
thought that I'd put enough in my perl script that the script wouldn't
return bad data. However, it may be dying when trying to open a file (it
shouldn't - it should flag itself with a problem and continue, but I
digress).

Basically - if the script called with the -e option of xfaces aborts, will
xfaces handle it gracefully, or will it segfault (which seems to be what
mine is doing)?

Also, anyone got tips on locking the files to prevent this from happening?

Jason

I discovered the same problem with my own script. After two checks it will sig fault the
fourth one. Is this a bug in xfaces, or could it be caused by the script? I'm pretty sure
the script outputs correct data all the time...

Thanks, Ernstjan.

I found a patch which seems to solve our problem. Xfaces won't Seg Fault anymore.
You can find the patch at: ftp.cs.indiana.edu
in the: pub/faces/xfaces directory
The patch which solves the problem is: patch-faber

You will find some other patches too in this directory.
Hope this will help you,

I suppose you could just maintain a text file with lines of the form
  canonical-address alias [alias...]

It would then be trivial to write a script that takes this file and
creates all the appropriate symlinks in the filesystem. I wouldn't
think it should even take much effort beyond what you already put in to
maintain the picons db.

If you don't have the time, however, perhaps a volunteer could be
found. If this is a problem that people think is worth solving, of
course.

Brian.

Hi
I used to use a derivative of xfaces when I used to do all of
my work on an AIX workstation. Now that I sit in front of
a Windows 95 screen all day, one of the things that I miss most
is the little display that pops up a familiar face when I get
important mail.

So I finally decided to do something about it! I now have a
Java application (not an applet) that will periodically
check a POP3 mailbox and put up a Picon for any mail that
it recognizes. It uses the piconsearch at www.cs.indiana.edu
to locate Picons. It will also search any of the mail headers
with Regular Expressions and if matched will use your specified
URL to access an image either from your file system or from the
net.

It seems to be working OK for me, and I am now ready for some
Beta testers. To start with, I would like to find a couple
of volunteers that are willing to try it out and give me some
feedback on problems. Ideally, I would like to have someone
on a Mac, someone on Win95 or NT and someone on some flavor of
Unix. The only requirement is that you have Java 1.02 installed and
get your Mail from a POP3 server. And most importantly have
time next week to install it, give it a try, and
send me some feedback. If I get some volunteers, I will send
out a distribution file this weekend. If all goes well, I
will make this code available on the Web in a couple of weeks and
also add it to the Picon archive.

You can volunteer either by private e-mail or via this mailing list.

Hi.

I'm new to this group, so I apologise if this has been treated here before, but I can't find it in the FAQ. My problem is that if the from address is e.g.
Anders.Magnusson@hallf.lth.se the face from the database won't be found, but if I use
hlam@hallf.lth.se it will. I have tried to add a face picon for myself in our local database and I put it under
users/se/lth/hallf/hlam (which is my username) and made a symbolic link
users/se/lth/hallf/Anders.Magnusson -> users/se/lth/hallf/hlam.
This doesn't work. I haven't seen any faces for people with addresses like xxx.yyy so I think I must be doing something wrong. Does anybody know what?

Thanks
Anders

The whole address is converted to lower-case first, so the A and M will be

Hello,

I'm using xfaces now for a long time, but I have the following
problem:

I have a bunch of color xpm files, which are the faces of people who
I'm in contact with. (The xpm files contain a big number of colours).
When xfaces is showing the xpm files, the program steals all the
colors in the color-map, causing other applications to fail in
allocating colours.

Now,

- Is there a way to tell xfaces to install/not-install it's own colormap?
(in the same way netscape does with the -install/-no-install flag?)

- How can I reduce the number of colours in xpm files?. (Any X-Windows
program that does this?, I was using 'xv', but it seems to produce a
corrupted xpm file if I save it with a reduced color set.)

Thanks.

I get the same problem here, sigh.

Not that I know of, but you don't want this anyway - do you really want
to have the whole screen flashing like that? What you *really* want is
to tell faces to only grab a maximum of x colours. I find that if I run
netscape first, and then use xfaces, netscape grabs the colours, and
xfaces makes do in a fairly effective manner.

you can do this with the netpbm package, although offhand I can't
remember the exact command. One of the programs included will
reduce the number of colours in a bitmap to the amount you specify,
picking the best options. Alternatively, you can tell pbm to make
bitmap X use the same colourmap as bitmap Y. In his excellent
webmasters book, Lincoln D. Stein presents a script for making a
whole pile of images use the same, reduced colourmap. Sound
useful?

There is a program called pixy which was written specifically for dealing
with this problem, and there is the ImageMagick suite which allows you to
do basically the same thing.

Pixy was written by Romano Giannetti <romano@iet.unipi.it>.
Here's the LSM:

Title: pixy
Version: 3.2

Description: This program reduces the number of colors used in a set
of XPM (pixmap) files to a fixed predefined set of
colors. Options determine the conversion strategy.
Especially useful for xpm-icon window managers like fvwm

Besides the options already mentioned, there's a handy script
called "recolor" in the AIcons support software (available
at ftp://ftp.cs.indiana.edu/pub/AIcons/support.tar.gz).
You need NetPBM installed, too. For maintaining the Picons
collections, I use this and the colormap/greymap files in
ftp://ftp.cs.indiana.edu/pub/faces/picons/src/bits-*. Using these map
files means you're using the same standard reduced colorset that the
picons and other conforming systems use. However, for color XPMs of
people, they can often look pretty lousy and you have to resort to using
the greyscale map.

| you can do this with the netpbm package, although offhand I can't
| remember the exact command.

ppmquant(1), I believe.

| When xfaces is showing the xpm files, the program steals all the

|
|
|
|

I am not sure of the first but the second I can definately help with.

I am the coordinator for Anthony's X Windows Icon library (started 1991)
and had a simular problem with colors for icons. If you just use them
as contributed, each used a a set of colors and every icon used a
different set.

Anthony's X Windows Icon Library (AIcons)
      http://www.sct.gu.edu.au/~anthony/icons/

My solution was to pick a set of 30 colors and recolor all the icons to
this set.

For the color picking process what was wanted etc. see..
    http://www.sct.gu.edu.au/~anthony/icons/docs/colortable.html
For the final color selections
    http://www.sct.gu.edu.au/~anthony/icons/docs/colors.html
or in a X pixmap file
    http://www.sct.gu.edu.au/~anthony/icons/desc/cl-misc/colortable.xpm

Now for your solution.

The core program I used to recolor icons (X pixmaps) was the PbmPlus
filter ``ppmquant'' This can take a `ppm' file of colors and
either dither images into this map (your need) or replace the colors
(my need). It can also just reduce the colors used, but the colors
picked may not be the same across all images in that case (unless all
images are concatanated in to image to give to the program). As such
I recommend creating a ppm colormap.

`ppmquant' is part of the pbmplus (netpbm) filter package
    ftp://ftp.cit.gu.edu.au/pub/users/A.Thyssen/netpbm-1mar94.p1.tgz

The Colormap I use is available at
    http://www.sct.gu.edu.au/~anthony/icons/local/colormap.ppm
or in X pixmap format (not directly usable by `ppmquant'
    http://www.sct.gu.edu.au/~anthony/icons/desc/cl-misc/colormap.xpm

ASIDE: A colormap is just a ppm image with the colors wanted in it.
Often just one pixel for each color wanted to make it minimal.

The `ppmquant' can only be run on one image, also I wanted to recolor
whole directories of X Pixmap images, so I wrote quite a number of
scripts to convert the X Pixmaps to ppmplus, recolor them, convert them
back AND fix the color names which ppmplus filters delete.

All these scripts can be found in the AIcons support script area
   http://www.sct.gu.edu.au/~anthony/icons/support/scripts/
or download this support files from
   ftp://ftp.cit.gu.edu.au/pub/AIcons/support.tar.gz

The specific script to recolor icons is called (suprise) `recolor'

EG: recolor *.xpm
or recolor -fs *.xpm # dithered recolor
or recolor -fs -f colormap.ppm *.xpm # with this colormap

This will recolor all X Pixmaps in the corrent directory renaming them
from
       name.xpm
to
       name_recol.xpm
or is the number of colors was reduced
       name_recol_bad.xpm

WARNING: recolor depends on other scripts in the support scripts
directory a couple of which also depend of perl being installed
(to create and use a pixel->colorname database for the ppm image
to X pixmap conversion)

USAGE:

I will make only one more suggestion...

When I start my X windows session I want to ensure that programs like
netscape do not grab the 30 `standard' colors I use. As such I
want to assign those colors before netscape and others are run.

To do this I have a line like the following in my .xsession or .xinitrc
X windows startup file.

=======8<--------CUT HERE----------axes/crowbars permitted---------------
#/bin/sh
#...

# ----- Get Server information ---------
# set variables : WIDTH HEIGHT SERVERHOST CLIENTHOST HOST X/Y_RESOLUTION ....
eval `xrdb -symbols | sed -n '/=/{s/-D\([^= ]*\)=*/\1=/gp;}'`
HOST=`hostname` # correct this xrdb setting

#...

if [ $PLANES != 1 ]; then    # color display
  # Load standard colortable to insure these color are present.
  sxpm -geometry 6x5-40-40 $HOME/icons/local/colormap.xpm &
  sleep 1 # pause a moment
fi

#...
=======8<--------CUT HERE----------axes/crowbars permitted---------------

The -geometry places the image underneth my xclock which is started later
in the sequence.

I also recomend ctwm for seting the icons various programs use.

I think that is enough for now. Use the above as you see fit and I hope
all this helps.

I will be placing a copy of this in my ``Tower of Computation Sorcery''
X windows floor, which is part of my ``Web Castle''.

MailFaces is a Java application that uses the PIcon Database
to display an icon representing the sender userid or domain
for mail that is sitting in a POP3 Mailbox.

It should run on any Unix, Win95, NT or Mac workstation that has
Java installed on it (Java Development Toolkit).

So far it has only been tested on Win95 and NT systems. I am
still looking for Unix and Mac testers.

Version 1.0 of MailFaces is ready for distribution.
Download and Installation instruction can be found at
  http://gate.cruzio.com/~jthomas/mailfaces/

Feedback is welcomed.

Subject: piconsearch now available
Errors-To: faces-request@cs.indiana.edu

Dear "faces" mailing list member,

CGI and Plexus programs for a picons lookup/search service on the Web
are now available. This is the same as the service at

	http://www.cs.indiana.edu/picons/search.html

and could be useful if you wanted to run your own local service for better
performance or different picons databases. JavaFaces requires a service
like this and can be configured to use either the www.cs.indiana.edu
one or any other.

The scripts are 'piconsearch' and 'piconsearch.pl' in the picons "apps"
sources in the Picons Archive at:

	http://www.cs.indiana.edu/picons/ftp/

or directly for now at:

	ftp://ftp.cs.indiana.edu/pub/faces/picons/src/apps-2.17.tar.Z

Enjoy, Steve

PS: Remember to contribute your picons to the main archive! See
<URL:http://www.cs.indiana.edu/picons/ftp/faq.html#submit>.
