The photographs below show the final laboratory project in
the IU Computer Science Department's
Digital Systems course. HO-guage train engines are fitted
with an embedded microprocessor, a configurable logic device (FPGA), and
an infra-red range finder.
The assignment is to design a collision-avoidance system
under which engines keep from running into each other.

augmented track layout has replaced the
figure-8 version shown below. (The actual track has
an additional spur on the outer loop, not shown in the layout.)

added to for future lab exercises in networking.
