The Giant Emperor Penguin (12/14/95)

I went to the zoo
To see all the animals
And the one that struck me most
Was the Giant Emperor Penguin
Who was so ungainly and laughable
But tried to maintain his composure, like the perfect host.

Yet, as I walked around the zoo
I got to walk under the penguin cage
And saw the Giant Emperor Penguin swim.
It swished and swerved and glided
And as it id, my bad opinions were elided
Replaced with thoughts of how the Giant Emperor Penguin looked so trim.

Sometimes people do the same
As the Giant Emperor Penguin.
They flow so badly through the streams of life
So clearly out of their league or place
That it's impossible to figure
How they wake up in the morning without great strife.

And it's hard to keep a straight face sometimes
Watching the Giant Emperor Penguins walk
Or talk or work or just try to be themselves
They look SO foolish, don't they?
Maybe they're just out of place, and
Therein, they move with grace and charm and dance like elves.

Now when I go to work or the store
And watch the ungainly waddle
Of the Giant Emperor Penguins about me;
Not quite walking in this world,
Puffed up on minute powers or faded glories,
I just dance in a separate sphere and let them be.
