It was the year 1979 when I made my foray into this
world, in a place called Bombay (now
rechristened Mumbai) in the state of
Maharashtra, in India. From then
to now, I have come a long way in my aspirations, and I still have a
long way to go!
My schooling was very distributed; in the
sense that it was partly completed at Goregaon and at Sion. I
had a number of house changes; from Goregaon to Sion then to
Bandra and now at Chembur (People from Mumbai will find these places very
familiar). At each point of my career, I had to make important decisions
to help me get where I am right now. Firstly, I had to choose the Science
stream (the other choice being Commerce), then I had to score well in
order to get into the Engineering field and finally the desire to do a
Masters, for which I am now at Indiana University.
Life at Goregaon,as I remember it, is very fuzzy for
me; I was pretty
small then. I have few pleasant memories of playing Cricket and going
to school which was just a few blocks away. What that allowed me to do was
to sleep till late in the morning ( a practice that I still follow :)),
but it also meant that I could stay up late in the night (Yes, you are
right, I do that now too!). Of Bandra, I have the most vivid and clear
memories, I made lots of friends, and had a jolly time roaming around the
place till late in the nights. My shift to Chembur has been very recent
and the basic advantage that I had was that again my Engineering college
was a few block away.
IIf you ask me which period I most cherish, it would
have to be my Undergraduate Engineering period. This was the time when I
had maximum interaction with friends, and we really shared happiness and
sorrow with each other. I learnt the meaning of a 'team' and how to handle
'deadlines'. In all these, my friends played a major part. I can also say
that I enjoyed myself tremendously during these four years (of course, at
the expense of other people whom I don't want to mention ;)), and I never
felt that it ever affected my educational career. Others view Engineering
as a period, when one must pay utmost attention to studies, while I did
exactly the opposite. I think that it just proves that 'concepts' form the
most important part of higher-level studies rather than cramming stuff up.
