The goal of the Midwest Celebration of Women in Computing (MidWIC) conference is to provide a low cost, regionally-tailored, small conference for women in computing who do not have funding to attend major conferences. The Midwest Region includes eastern Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, western Pennsylvania and northern Kentucky.

MidWIC is a smaller version of the upcoming international Grace Hopper Celebration of Women in Computing (GHC) conference and a large-scale version of the recent Indiana Women in Computing Conference (InWIC), which brought together 127 women from 17 schools throughout Indiana.

MidWIC is held concurrent with the Consortium for Computing Science in Colleges (CCSC) Midwest Conference. Students wishing to attend MidWIC will likely be able to arrange transportation with faculty members at their school who are attending CCSC:MW. Information about lodging and directions can be found on the CCSC:MW site.

What will happen at MidWIC?

  • MidWIC will begin late on Friday afternoon and continue through lunch on Saturday.
  • Keynote speaker: Sheila Castañeda, Associate Professor and Chair of Computer Science at Clarke College.
  • Talks on cutting-edge technical issues and on social issues of relevance to undergraduate and graduate women in computing will be presented.
  • Creative social opportunities to meet faculty members, students, and area industry leaders.

Who can attend MidWIC?

The conference will bring together people from industry and academic institutions in the Midwest. Undergraduate and graduate students from schools in Eastern Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Michigan, Western Pennsylvania, and Northern Kentucky are encouraged to attend. High school students are invited to attend the Saturday activities. Student scholarships are available and will cover the costs of attending MidWIC, up to $200, including the $40 registration fee for CCSC:MW.

Faculty, professionals, and other non-students are welcome to attend MidWIC, but are not eligible for scholarships and must pay the full $150 registration fee for CCSC:MW.

All MidWIC participants should also fill out the online MidWIC registration form.
