DOE NGI Application Information

The following chart gives some characteristics of the XPorts projects requirements on the network end.  It particurlarly focuses on the needs from ESNet, the Energy Sciences Network.

Project Name Grid-based X-Ray Crystalography Collaboratory
Application Description instrument data stream analysis, remote storage, and feedback control
PI's Randall Bramley (bramley@cs.indiana.edu)
Donald F. (Rick) McMullen (mcmullen@indiana.edu)
Sites Involved
site ISP/Network application/system component
IU Abilene processing and storage (HPSS)
LBNL ESNet data source (ALS)
ANL ESNet data source (APS), processing and storage
Networks Used ESnet, Abilene
Bandwidth Requirements
  • bulk transfer of individual CCD frames (9-32MB) from LBNL to IU in <2sec:  ~128Mbps sustained for ~12 h. per experiment
  • 2 or more channels of streaming video: 384Kbps ea.
  • visualization and IPC requirements for distributed reduction and analysis programs being evaluated
Latency Requirements Max allowable latency will vary from 0.1 seconds for interactive collaboration and initial structure determination, to several seconds for later stages of a given x-ray session.
QOS Requirments (bandwidth, jitter, etc.) 128Mbit/sec bandwidth reservation
Other (multicast? multiple streams? etc) parallel data transfer streams using pftp to HPSS,
PtP and multicast video teleconferencing
