Requirements Document returned in class tomorow (10/11)

I will be giving back the requirements document and providing feedback
to all of the groups tomorrow during the class activity (the lecture part
will be very short). Please try to have the entire group in attendance. If
I can't make it to all groups, I will meet with people immediately after
class... so you might let me know if you cannot stay longer so I can meet
with your group first. --Kay

Update your wiki!

The requirements document is due next week. I've been looking over the wikis to see if any groups are having problems that I need to address... but some of you have very little on your wiki. This is the primary venue for Adity and I to keep tabs on the group, so please try to update it with your current progress and status. --Kay

Weekly presentation

Hi everyone,

Here is what I will be grading you on for your weekly presentations:

10 pts: presentation. Just the basics (i.e., tempo, eye contact, slide format, etc...)

10 pts: content. Make sure to cover the theme, and not just what is in the paper (i.e., did you bring in outside work, your own thoughts, interesting videos, etc...)

10 pts: discussion. This class is supposed to be active for everyone. Give the class ample opportunity to get involved. (i.e., did you get the class involved throughout your presentation? did you pose stimulating questions or scenarios? Did you have some type of class activity?, etc...)

Wiki: Group Project Space

Each group should now have their own project space. Link to the page . You will be submitting all your work in your group space.

You must be logged in to view your space.Make sure you can access your own group space. If you can't send me an email.

Also, you should not be able to view other group spaces. Let me know if you can.

project requests

Hi everyone,

All but two students have signed up under project requests. I will be making final assignments of the groups this evening, and announcing them in class tomorrow. Groups that are fully formed by 4pm today are most likely to remain intact. I may have to split up other people who signed up together, although I will do my best to avoid it. Thus, it is in your best interest to look at the wiki and contact other partial groups to see if your groups can merge. Because we have 21 students in the course, there will be one project that consists of 5 team members... and five projects that consist of 4 team members. The main requirement for composition is that you have at least one design-oriented student and one technically-oriented student. I know some people are both!

Office Hours

Unfortunately, Kay will not be able to make it to her office hours today (9/4/2007).

September 3, 2007

office hours tomorrow, 9/4/07

My office hours will not start until 10am tomorrow, September 4th
due to a previous engagement which I could not re-schedule. If you
plan to attend, please check the course web site beforehand, as Adity
will post an update if I am unable to get back before 10am.

Wiki

If you haven't registered yourself for using the Wiki, here is the link- register

Once you have registered, try and see if you can create a page. To create a page in a wiki, you just search for it, and if it does not exist, you get to create it. To start with, search for playground:username using your own username, and create a page to play around with the wiki syntax. Also, make sure and glance at the documentation here.

We will be using the Wiki for the group projects- you will form groups, have space to store your work, submit documents, get Kay's comments, etc. No group will be able to see another group's documents. We will be going over the details in the labs this week.

Bookmark the web site and check it regularly. All announcements will be posted here.

Error in syllabus dates

There was an error on the printed syllabus which had the week of thanksgiving and the prototype fair inverted. The web site has the correct dates: There will be no class or labs the week of 11/20 (thanksgiving), there will be the prototype fair the week after thanksgiving (11/27, 11/29) during the lecture sessions, and help with IRB applications during the technical lab meeting times.

Sorry for the confusion. --Kay

Pervasive Computing: Fall 2007

This course will cover both technical and human aspects of the rapidly growing field of ubiquitous computing. The course is aimed at students from both Computer Science and the HCI student in Informatics. Students from other programs are welcome but should consult with the faculty first. Students will learn how to design, build and evaluate various ubicomp technologies in order to create novel user experiences. Too often in academia, pervasive computing projects are developed by computer scientists with little understanding of the field of human-computer interaction. Conversely, HCI students do not always have the technical knowledge to fully implement a pervasive computing application that they design. This course enables students from different backgrounds to come together and work as multidisciplinary teams.

Students wishing to take the course should have a basic knowledge of a programming language (e.g., C, java).
