Section 1: Downloading Files
Section 2: Viewing Grades
Section 3: Submitting Grades

Section 1: Downloading Files

Vincent is primarily a file handling system. As an assistant, you can filter your search for submitted files by any of a number of criteria; section number, username, filename, assignment ID, and submission date are the most common limiters. You can also filter for the most recent version of a file submitted by students (in the event that multiple files were submitted), and you can also ignore files sumitted "late," assuming that some deadline was imposed to begin with.

To filter your search, you must first check the criteria on the left of the interface--this activates it. Then, either select or input the information you would like to use as a search limiter. Each filter is described briefly below.

  • Section Number
If your class is divided into sections, and you are responsible for only one (or more) of those sections, use this field limiter. If you do not care to limit your search by section number, do not check this criteria.
  • Username
If you check this field, then only files submitted by the student whose username you type in will be shown.
  • Assignment ID
You can choose to limit your search to one assignment in particular. This is useful if you are grading all of "Assignment Two," for example. If you are looking for something across all assignments (like all the work submitted by one student), then do not check this filter.
  • Date
If you are looking for files submitted on a particular date, use this criteria. Unfortunately, you cannot look for all files submitted before or after a particular date. This feature has not been requested at this time.
  • Most Recent
If you check this criteria, then only the most recent version of a file submitted by a given student will be shown. This way, if user jdoe submitted fourteen copies of myProgram.java, you'll only see their final submission.
  • Ignore Late Submissions
You can exclude files that were submitted "late." If slip time is used, this does not exclude files that came in after the deadline, but before the student ran out of sliptime. However, files that are late and use all of a student's remaining sliptime will not be included if you check this option.

Section 2: Viewing Grades

You can view the grades for a section. Select the section you wish to view grades for, as well as the assignment(s) you are interested in viewing grades for. Click submit.

In this view, grades are colorized according to a fairly simple scheme. Fonts with a

Blue Background
are low grades according to the maximum possible score for that assignment. Grades with a
Red Background
are high for that assignment; pure red is a 100%. The spectrum between these "cold" and "hot" grades is a continuum, then; purplish grades tend to be in the middle. This color scheme is designed to help make it easy for you to spot trends for one student ("How come Joey suddenly got a 100%, when they've been getting 36% across all their previous assignments?", etc.) as well as trends within a section ("Wow! Everybody really blew that assignment!")

Grades that have a white background with black text (fairly obvious) are too high for that assignment. For example, an assignment might be worth 10 points; a score entered as "100" would be to high for that assignment, and therefore flagged with a white background.

Grades that are an "X" have not yet been assigned.

Section 3: Submitting Grades

Select the assignment and section you wish to submit grades for. Simply enter the grades into each field for each student, and click submit when you are done.

If grades were entered for this assignment previously, they will be flagged in pink; you should not change these unless you know you are supposed to. This is especially important in A110 at IUB, where more than one AI is responsible for a section or sections. Don't overwrite your partner's grades!

If you wish to "clear" or "remove" a grade, you have no recourse but to enter a zero. Leaving a space blank means nothing to Vincent, and the grade will remain unchanged.
