Computer Games
I enjoy playing computer games, particularly war games and RPGs. I try to join up with friends in various places when possible either via an online game or through a VPN. Particularly good games include the Civilization Series, the orginal X-com, the Heroes Series, and the Warlords Battlecry series.
Math
Math is key to understanding the world, and computer science. Many of the best computer people I know are also skilled mathmaticians, in particular, my old mentor from IPFW. As such, I have taken many math classes, indeed, almost a third of my masters degree was in math. Abstract algebra is of particular use in understanding the logical structure of programs, while linear algebra is a necessacity for graphics work, and statistics is a virtual requirement to do any form of significant research.
History, Politics, Economics, and Philosophy
These four subjects are all interrelated, and are essentially about understanding the human condition. While some of them have clear application to my work, such as economics, I enjoy them for their own sake as well. In part, they help one learn how to deal with problems of all forms. My favorite philosophers are from the enlightenment in Europe, running from approximately Hobbes to Mill. History helps me understand not only contemporary problems and their importance, but it is also enjoyable for its own sake. It is always good to keep a sense of historical perspective about current events. Politics is really just a product of the others, hence the well-known term, political economy.
Ballroom Dance
I haven taken about year's worth of ballrom dance classes. I enjoy dance and music, though I offer no partical defense of them. I simply enjoy them for their own sake.
Playing the Flute
I used to play the flute, and did so for several years. I was involved in some competitions while in school, and even played a bit overseas in a trip to Italy - though that was as much or more for pure enjoyment as it was to play. Alas, due to time constraints and other hobbies / interests I have not played in many years, and I have no doubt lost what skill I had at it.
Go
I play the board game Go. I am on the order of 3 - 6 kyu. Previously, I used to play chess, but I got away from that and into Go as I learned more about it.
