The IU Beer and Algorithms group is a weekly gathering of IU students, alumni, and people who just happen to be nearby, to learn about algorithms while enjoying a social evening out. Each week, after dinner, one person gets to balance the portable whiteboard on the table and teach a topic of their choice. Topics haveincuded: aproximation algorithms, randomized algorithms, quantum computing and cryptography. Speakers are encouraged to break up their talks with a couple short, interesting problems for their audience to try out. To participate, all you have to do is RSVP--there's no reading requirement, and the expected background is fairly minimal (basic familiarity with discrete math, some idea what a turing machine is).
We meet at 7pm on monday evenings. The format often turns out to be dinner from about 7pm-8pm, and algorithms from about 8pm-9pm.
If you'd like to join us, just let me know (iu address: ctask) and I'll add you to our email list... and make sure we have a seat for you at the table.
