Hinglisms

Don't be surprised if your Indian friends use some of these hinglisms, like "who said?!" or "mad or what?!" These phrases are literal translations of their Hindi equivalents (e.g., "who said?" = "kisne bola?" and "mad or what?" = "pagal hai kya?"). I try to give the closest (non-Indian) English equivalent for each hinglism, but please note that they don't always convey the exact meaning.

1. ..., okayyyy = ..., kyaaa
   (adds emphasis with an air of definace. For example, "Keep shut (=shut up), okayyyy.")
   English equivalent: ..., all right
2. Who Said? = kisne bola?
   For maximum pleasure, say it like this: "aaeeeyyygh whossssed!!?"
   English equivalent: Says who?
3. Means what? = matlab kya? (or manje kai? in Marathi)
   English equivalent: What does that mean? What do you mean?
4. Means...means... = yane/matlab...yane/matlab...
   English equivalent: I mean...I mean...
5. Pop's road or what? = baap ka rasta hai kya?
   (Often heard on the street, one driver to another)
   English equivalent: Do you think you own the road?
6. Then what!? = phir kya!?
   English equivalent: of course, what else?
7. Tooooo much! = bahoot khoob
   English equivalent: amazing, wow
8. Fun will come = majaa ayega
   English equivalent: It'll be fun
9. What men? = kya yaar
   English equivalent: Oh come ooonnnn!!
10. And your good name sir/ma'am? = aur apka shub naam ji?
    English equivalent: And your name sir/ma'am?
11. First ... then talk, okay = pehle ... phir bol, kyaaa
    English equivalent (?): First...and then we'll see about that
12. Mother swear = ma kasam
    (God swear is not uncommon either)
    English equivalent: I swear on my mother
13. Anything or what? = kuch bhi kya?
    English equivalent (?): Oh come on, how can you say that?
14. Mad or what? = paagal hai kya?
    English equivalent: Are you crazy/mad?
15. No shame or what? = kuch sharam nahi hai kya?
    English equivalent: Don't you have any shame?
16. But how? = magar kaise?
    (e.g., But how it happened? = magar kaise hua?)
    English equivalent: How did it...
17. But why? = magar kyon?
    English equivalent: How come?
18. What goes of yours/mine? = tera/mera kya jaata hai?
    English equivalent: What's it to you/me?
19. Nothing goes of mine = mera kuch nahi jaata hai
    English equivalent: No sweat off my back, not my problem
20. What is it to me? = Apne ko kya?
    English equivalent: similar to previous
21. That only = woh ich ("woich")
    English equivalent: Exactly
22. That way?! = waisa kya?
    English equivalent: Is that so?!
23. Like that or what? = waisa kya
    English equivalent: Is that so?
24. Since when...= kabh se... ("Since when I've been telling you...")
    English equivalent: I've been telling you this for a while...
25. What is there in that? or simply, "What is there?" = Usme kya hai?
    English equivalent = There's nothing to it
26. Waiter at restaurant listing available drinks: "Coke is here/there, Diet Coke is here/there,..." = Coke hai, Diet Coke hai, ...
    English equivalent = We have Coke, Diet Coke, ...
27. Big doctor = bada doctor (e.g., "John Doe is a big doctor" or "Jane Doe is a big accountant")
    English equivalent = Famous/reknowned doctor
28. I also = mein bhi
    English equivalent : Me too
29. What to do? = kya karen?
    English equivalent : "What can we do?" but usually in the rhetorical sense of "What can we do? There's nothing we can do about it."
30. Gone case = gayela
    English equivalent: blockhead, dumbbell, someone whose "mind is gone"
31. Total... = ekdam/bilkul... (e.g., "that guy is a total gone case")
    English equivalent: Complete/absolute... (e.g., "that guy is a complete/absolute idiot")
32. Keep (your mouth) shut = (muh) bandh rakh (e.g., "keep your mouth shut, okayyyy")
    English equivalent: Shut up
