A290 (C/UNIX): Class Policies
Summer 2009
Policies
The information contained in this page is not optional. You are responsible for conducting yourself in accordance with the rules below. Ignorance of a rule stated or referred to here is not grounds for excusal. If you have questions regarding a policy, ask the instructor before you act.
Grading
- Assignments: There will be assignments approximately daily, for 50% of your grade.
- Quizzes: There will be weekly quizzes on material covered in class, for 10% of your grade.
- Participation: Participation will account for 10% of your grade.
- Exam: There will be one final exam, for 30% of your grade.
Homework
Homework assignments will be given most days, and due the next class day. Since the class must move quickly, late homework submissions will not be accepted without a convincing, well-documented medical excuse. Students should e-mail the instructor as soon as possible in the event of a medical emergency.
Written homeworks should be handed in at class, and programming homeworks will be due in electronic form on OnCourse. Your code is expected to compile and run on the Burrow machines in LH004; if it does not, "But it worked on my Ubuntu computer at home" will not be considered sufficient excuse.
You may discuss homework assignments for this course with other students, but the work you turn in must be your own... no copying! You must also cite the name of every person you worked with at the top of your assignment. Failure to do so can be considered plagiarism (see the department's academic integrity policy). It is always safe to discuss the assignments with the instructor, and you may include any results of these discussions without explicit reference.
Quizzes
Quizzes are closed-book and closed-notes. Quizzes are not designed to be difficult or time-consuming, but simply to evaluate the degree to which students have assimilated the material.
It should be obvious, but group work is not permited on the quizzes. The quizzes must be entirely your own work.
Withdrawal
Make sure you know the last day to drop a course or withdraw from all courses with an automatic 'W'. See the Registrar's school calendar -- for Summer Intensive I 2009, the date is May 20. After that date, a student may withdraw only with the permission of his or her dean. This approval is normally only for urgent reasons related to extended illness or equivalent distress.
Incompletes
An incomplete ('I') final grade will be given only by prior arrangement in exceptional circumstances conforming to university and departmental policy which requires, among other things, that the student have completed the bulk of the work required for the class with a passing grade, and that the remaining work can be made up within 30 days after the semester.
