Make Corporations Pay

To the editor:

On June 16th, the U.S. Department of Labor awarded a $2.8 million grant to the Computer Technology Industry Association (CompTIA), an organization that bills itself as representing the business interests of the information technology industry. The grant will, in part, fund an apprenticeship program for 10 information technology professionals at McDonald's Corporation and recruit member company Microsoft to evaluate this program.

McDonald's corporation has 30,000 restaurants worldwide and serves 16 billion customers a year for a total annual sales of over $40 billion. Microsoft chairman Bill Gates has enough wealth to pay the entire yearly tab for all 16 billion McDonald's customers. If McDonald's and Microsoft, two of the richest corporations on the planet, want to develop an apprenticeship program for their information technology professionals, I applaud their efforts. But, it should certainly not be done at taxpayer expense.
