The FAQWhat's a FAQ?FAQ is an acronym that stands for Frequently Asked Questions. It is pronounced "fack", not "eff-aye-cue". More information about FAQs can be found in the "Netiquette" chapter of The Better Way. How much time will it take to complete this course? The answer depends a lot on you. Correspondence courses are very different from classroom courses. Many people take their time with the course, and complete it in a leisurely 6-9 months. Others are in more of a hurry, usually because they are up against a deadline. These students turn in a new lesson as soon as they receive a graded lesson. Here are some time estimates for these students:
Can I use email to submit my lessons?Yes. This is a computer class, and we encourage using computers as much as possible. Please read the email submission instructions. Can I submit multiple lessons?Multiple lesson submission does not work well for this course, since the rules will only allow you to submit lessons 5 and 6 together. If you are under time pressure, it is much better to submit lessons via email. I did not receive disk mailers! What should I do?First, double-check the pocket at the back of the learning guide. The disk mailers are cardboard envelopes with a bit of padding inside. If they are not there, you can call the office and ask for some, but you do not need to wait for new mailers in order to submit your lesson. You can use any type of padding or disk-mailer to protect the disk. There is only one reason for using these: I want your disk to arrive intact. The machines used by the post office often smash disks, which makes grading lessons rather difficult. Can I use Microsoft Works? No. Microsoft Works simply does not have enough power to complete all of the assignments. Even though you can get through the first two assignments with Works, you will need to switch to a full-featured office package to complete the course. Should I purchase the discounted Microsoft Office? If you do not have a full-featured office package on your computer, I highly recommend purchasing MS Office through Indiana University. Through the IU license agreement, you can get the full version of Office for $10. This package normally sells for several hundred dollars! If you plan to do a lot of web design, you may want to consider the "premium" version of Office, which is $20 through our agreement. The premium version includes FrontPage, a fairly nice website creation and management system. Note: you do not need FrontPage for this course, though you are welcome to use it for Lesson 6 if you like. If you did not receive the licensing agreement with your course packet, you can obtain one by calling the office at (800)334-1011. On the other hand, if you already have an office package, such as Lotus Smart Suite or Star Office, this decision depends on what package you would like to use in the future. The learning guide uses pictures of the Microsoft products for illustration, but you should have little trouble following along with your office package. (And you can always ask me if you get stuck with something!) Can I use a Mactintosh computer?Using a Mac is fine. There are only a few items to beware of:
