Swimming Through Life (9/18/96, revised after Heidi's comments)

i swim a lot of laps
to keep my weight down
and to keep my sanity up --
problems dissolve
in chlorinated water.

love is kinda like swimming laps
(oh, god, another metaphor for love...)

when there's only one person in a lane,
that person swims alone,
back and forth,
some people like solo lane time,
some people go insane...

when there's more than two people in a lane,
you swim circles,
round and round we go,
sometimes you swim too fast,
sometimes you swim too slow,
and rarely does everyone go at the same speed.
some people like it,
but most don't.

when there's exactly two people in a lane,
you split the lane into two halves.
the lane is wide enough for each person
to do their own thing independently,
yet still sharing the lane
no one's chasing round and round.

if they're graceful,
they can sharing the space between,
occupying it alone if needed,
nullifying space completely
when they want...
