Dr. Qiu is an assistant professor of Computer Science at Indiana University. She graduated from Syracuse University with an Outstanding Graduate Student Award, completing her Ph.D. in Computer Science in 2005. She leads SALSA project encompassing data-intensive computing at the intersection of Cloud and multicore technologies in Digital Science Center. She offers an online course CloudMOOC as part of the Data Science Program at SoIC. She is a recipient of NSF CAREER Award in 2012 and Indiana University Trustees Award For Teaching Excellence in 2013-2014.

Her other interests include playing the piano (12+ years), teaching students (7+ years) and communicating with people.

 Research Interests top

    My interest is to research the architecture and use of leading edge technologies with always attention to their value in important applications. Here I am currently looking at Life Science and Geographic Information System problems using experts from these fields as collaborators.

    Parallel Datamining Research Thrust
    We originally identified data-mining as a promising area for parallel multicore applications but we have generalized our approach to data-intensive computing using the convergence of cloud and multicore technologies. Although there are many areas where data intensive computing is important, I currently intend to expand my work in the Life Sciences area and make this the focus of work in SALSA. We have had great success recently using MapReduce in several Bioinformatics/Biology problems. Further we have shown how dimension reduction by both MDS (Multi-dimensional Scaling) and GTM (Generative Topographic Mapping) is interesting tool for Cheminformatics as it allows a natural way of browsing large databases where compounds with similar properties are nearby. Dimension reduction is a powerful tool for visualizing high dimensional data and we have developed efficient parallel algorithms but in the important case of DNA sequences where we do not have aligned vectors but just pairwise distances, the best known algorithms are O(N2). However I have designed a new approach that offers promise of an O(NlogN) multiscale approach to this problem which if successful will allow us to perform clustering and dimension reduction on millions of sequences. This important research goal is basis of the NSF Data Intensive Computing proposal that I just submitted with Mina Rho in Informatics.

    MapReduce Research Thrust
    As well as new algorithms, I intend continuing the other thrusts of the SALSA group which include investigations of MapReduce and its generalizations as an attractive programming model for data intensive computing. In particular another research thrust will be using, extending and evaluating Iterative MapReduce which adds support of iterative problems to the core MapReduce capabilities of “map” followed by “reduce”. Jaliya Ekanayake (senior student in SALSA) has developed a prototype iterative MapReduce of this for his PhD. We will continue to look at community and commercial MapReduce systems Hadoop and Dryad and feed back our lessons to their developers directly and through our papers. We have identified support of inhomogeneous problems (where currently dynamic scheduling in Hadoop sometimes outperforms the static task definition in Dryad) as one key issue. A challenge for Iterative MapReduce is maintaining the dynamic fault tolerance of current systems while extending support to iterative problems with tighter synchronization constraints.

    Multicore Research Thrust
    Finally we will continue our research thrust in multicore computing comparing various run-times including threading and MPI. We first showed that Microsoft’s CCR thread run time got excellent performance and will continue this work comparing CCR with Microsoft’s new TPL (Task Parallel Library)  thread library. The CCR work led to several papers – mostly with the developers of this runtime at Microsoft. We showed that CCR often outperformed MPI for equivalent operations (implemented internally to node). The support of applications with hybrid approaches (MPI between nodes and threading internal to node) is still an interesting research area which we will continue. Note that our datamining applications have now been run with three distinct run times/programming models – MapReduce, MPI and threading. One goal of the Iterative MapReduce project described in the above paragraph, a unified programming model for the different run times.

    As explained above, we will weave our different research thrusts (Datamining, MapReduce and Multicore) together by integrating them in systems that address serious data analysis problems in the Life Sciences.
